Replaced both of the original CVs on our new used 04 v8 this past weekend. I went with New Cardones I got of ebay for $62.00 a piece. dont really want to get into the OEM vs aftermarket debate. The car is gonna be a pavement pounding toddler toter and I just wanted something quick and cheap to get it through inspection.
Now I have two OEM cvs. I know they can be rebuilt and I'd like to fix em up for a backup. Other than cleaning, greasing and replacing the boots, is there anything else that needs to be done? Both had torn boots, which is why it failed inspection. The passenger side appears to be good, the boot just tore around the inner small clamp, but the drivers side appears to be in worse shape. It literally fell out of the car. The inner boot was barely there and th middle section is totally separate from the inner (fat end). I guess it was just held in by the compression between wheel and diff. There wasn't any clunking or popping when it was on the car, but I'm not sure if any damage was done during removal. Is there anything in particular to look for? Can I just stick the pieces back together and boot her up? I'll see if I can get some pictures up tomorrow.
