What would you change on the 5th gen?

Honestly I have no other real complaints except for the rather poorly designed tailgate window wiper. Totally anemic compared to other trucks and cars.

I rarely use mine, because it just kind of smears s*** around. It doesn't help that the giant low pressure area in the back attracts everything to the back window.

Of course if that is all we have to complain about, I would say we are in pretty good shape.

The current 4Runner is ok but it can use some updating.

I'd like to see two bubble domes, one in the front, while the one in the back is for quarreling kids, and comes with optional restraints and muzzles. The engine noise is a little soft perhaps something to make it sound like the world's coming to an end. Larger cup holders! something that can actually hold those massive drinks you get at the convenience store. The horn department is really lacking, there should be at least three horns, you can never find a horn when you are mad and they should all ring to the tune of La Cucaracha. Finally shag carpet and tailfins would add a lot of pep to an already big car.

Bingo. In the desert anytime I'd use the washer fluid and wiper it'd just start making a clumpy mess. It was easier to just never turn it on.

After 125k miles in a 2012 TE, I have just a few things that I would like changed if I were to someday buy another 5th gen 4Runner.

I still do not like the feel of the brake pedal, I think I would prefer regular vacuum powered power brakes with a solid pedal feel. and I still don't like the "brake assist" engaging at unpredictable times when I simply want to slow down a little bit not nose dive and throw stuff from the back to the front.

I would like the dimmer wheel for the dash lights to be lighted at night and relocated to a better place that is easier to access, since it is something that has to be constantly adjusted as it gets darker while driving in the evening and again as it gets lighter in the morning.

I would like better overhead lighting in the cargo area, I often have to use a flashlight at night to find things in the tool boxes that I carry back there.

There are a few other minor inconveniences like the glare off the fake useless hood scoop in the morning or evening sun and the rather small rear wiper, but those things I can live with.

Overall I am very happy with this vehicle, I have gone 125k miles with only one minor problem, the drivers door electric door lock failed at 120k miles but was covered by the extended warranty.

I did not have this level of reliability in the last two Jeeps that I owned.

A little better economy would be nice, and some proper AT tires on the TEs too.

Other than that, I'm happy.

Lose the &#$@! switches on the steering wheel for the radio and phone crap and put the horn buttons there.

Raise the drivers door armrest about 4 inches.

Make the mileage/compass/temp displays able to be brightened when the lights are on in the daytime.

Make the front and rear bumpers out of chromed steel.

Make the trim under the doors out of chromed steel.

Make the wheels out of steel - painted.

Shorten front and rear overhang about 6 inches - both ends.

Make the A-Trac on all of the time.



Pretty much everything else suits me as is - even though things like the sunroof, roll up rear window, entertainment crap I don't now and never will use.

ABS disable switch for snow/ice.

Memory seats/steering wheel on all models (not just limited)

Dimmer wheel for gauges that turns on all interior lights.

Dual climate control with heated/cooled seats.

No brake assist feature.

Relocate 7-way trailer harness to rear bumper. Hide hitch and plug behind plate like on Tahoe.

Remove gray/silver Trail bumper trim that hangs down 1/2inch and grabs dirt/grass.

6/7/8 speed automatic transmission

Rear cargo storage under FLAT floor when seats are folded down.

LED headlights and fog lights.

All Terrain LT tires C load range on Trail Model

Under seat tray storage for front seats.

Side exit exhaust behind rear wheel.

Larger wheel well openings and body mount that isn't so obtrusive into openings.

The general chassis/suspension is fine, but I wish it were physically smaller. It needs to go on a significant diet (F150 & Range Rover lost 700 lbs on their last redesigns), which might make my next point moot and that is the need for a significant bump in torque. Less pork would result in better economy too. Manual trans too, but Toyota will put a V8 in the Prius before that happens...

well now that you mention it...

1. The bluetooth is pretty good, but there's a lag between the video and sound when my kids play movies on their iPads.

2.Voice control SUCKS. It doesn't work. Period.

For a bigger vehicle, there isn't a whole lot of useable space to store stuff... I have a TE but all the bins seem really shallow or oddly shaped. Like the door handle slot, looks like space but nothing actually fits in there or flies around while driving.. I actually put a lot of items in the central small shelf that has the clock display and I don't think that was even an intended storage spot.

Nav sucks/ I'm not a fan of the Interface. Takes eight billion steps to do anything.

SUN VISORS!!! that don't block out the sun/ reduce all outward vision. Hate that when used on the side windows they are essentially useless. Really irritating/dangerous...

Headlights should auto shut off.... (maybe they do??? but I've never felt comfortable leaving them on)

General storage is an issue for me, I actually had more in my Tundra Double cab. There isn't a good place to put stuff like jumper cables, tow straps etc. Of course a 5.7L V8 option would slam this truck in to one of the meanest on the roads in any class. Most people customize audio/visual equipment after a couple years of ownership, so non-issue for me. Other than that, it's one of the most functional and reliable trucks out there.

Yah...like my legs. They sure didn't make these for tall drivers IMO.
