whats the flip open arm rest for?

The real reason for the little flip open arm rest is to provide a suitably hard edge to rest your elbow on when driving. I wish it was included within the centre console lid and had a bit more padding. I would give up whatever supposed purpose it has for a bit more comfort.

Ah...I'm not the only one! I thought it was just my long monkey arms that put me in the wrong position. But dang that thing is hard on the elbow!

it's just a tray. i think it says so in the owner's manny.that being said, i can't find a convenient place to put cds.

Spot under armrest

What is the spot under the armrest for? I don't have a pic yet, but can take one if you guys don't know what I'm talking about. If you lift up the armrest, on the underside of it, there is a large open area and a lip. My only guess is maybe for the manual, but I've never tried that.

Of what I've read, it's for the small size tissue box. Probally find them at an auto parts store.

I have a pad of larger sized post-it notes under there. (the flip forward part, not the tissue holder). You can only have 10-20 notes in the pad though, otherwise it won't close properly.

Its great for taking notes when you're on the phone etc.

I bought a couple of those non-slip pads that are on display by cash registers in auto-parts stores and cut them to shape to fit the angles of the tray when the lid is folded out. It still closes just fine, and now when I put my cell phone or MP3 player on it, they don't fly off as soon as I turn a corner or hit the brakes.

That being said, it's pretty uncomfortable when it's open -- there's no good place to put my elbow any more. Oh well. It's a trade off.

Did you look at the car before you bought it?

I use the little tray underneath the HVCA controls for: Registration, Insurance, money, toll receipts, ezpass, gum as well as others. I can get to them while driving and with two 1 liter poland spring bottles in the holder, its not very easy but possible.

As for the HVAC, your a woman, the little tray that slides out of your PC is a cupholder.

Yeah we know about the MPG readout. Its in another post.

In those two way-too-small compartments in the rear cargo area I store: Bungee cords, rachet tie downs, hitch pin, gloves, and a bunch of wenches.

yes, as much as I admire Toyota quality, not everything they do is above and beyond reproach.....sometimes it boggles the mind....sometimes it's Japanese infatuation with electronic gizmos......

So the little tray underneath the HVCA controls? I couldn't fit the garage door opener on the overly thick sunshade so I tossed the opener into the flip out tray there. Then I found that I could not open the tray to get at it when I had a commuter mug in the cup holder......and it's a short mug too...ggggrrrr.....then I found that I could slide the door opener on the second sun shade that is right above the main sun shade so the main sun shade is just a little bit lower. I don't put anything in the pop out tray under the HVAC controls. Too small for even a nice snubnose Smith and Wesson .38 Special or a Sig Sauer .380 ACP.....I guess "04Runner" could store his condoms and motion-lotion in there.......

Speaking of boggles the mind....I can't never get the right setting on the temperature on that "new and improved" HVCA control......sometimes old technology like a rotating knob just works better.....I don't need to know what temerpature I want, or whether it's 71 or 72 or 73....in my old car, I just turn the knob until I am comfy...simple.....

and that electronic MPG readout is just a tad too optimistic.....my actual fill up and miles calculation is always about 1-1.5 MPG below what the 'puter shows....

I still can't figure out what those two way-too-small compartments in the rear cargo area right on top of the wheel wells are for besides Martha Stewart popourri cache sacks....
