400 miles is possible, at least for me. It'd be running on fumes, but it's possible.
I'd rather have the smaller tank, actually. Less weight, and slightly easier on the wallet per fillup. Admittedly, I only fill mine up about twice per month.
Whatever you do, don't spend money to increase your fuel efficiency. That's completely bass-ackwards. The idea is to save money and consume less, right? Air up your tires, check filters, and drive reasonably. Anticipation is the key. Use your brakes as little as possible. Accelerating slowly isn't necessarily the answer, sometimes that can be worse. Get up to speed, and coast/maintain as needed, smoothly. If you want to spend money on increasing your fuel efficiency, buy a ScanGauge II. Great tool to have, and works on any OBDII car.
But what's really killing you is running in open loop. The one-mile "commute" you have is really inefficient. The engine never completely warms, and is running pretty rich. My suggestion...walk, jog, or bike to the train. Easier on your truck, your wallet, and your heart! Sound fruity, I know...but try it.
Good luck!
