400 miles is possible, at least for me. It'd be running on fumes, but it's possible.

I'd rather have the smaller tank, actually. Less weight, and slightly easier on the wallet per fillup. Admittedly, I only fill mine up about twice per month.

Whatever you do, don't spend money to increase your fuel efficiency. That's completely bass-ackwards. The idea is to save money and consume less, right? Air up your tires, check filters, and drive reasonably. Anticipation is the key. Use your brakes as little as possible. Accelerating slowly isn't necessarily the answer, sometimes that can be worse. Get up to speed, and coast/maintain as needed, smoothly. If you want to spend money on increasing your fuel efficiency, buy a ScanGauge II. Great tool to have, and works on any OBDII car.

But what's really killing you is running in open loop. The one-mile "commute" you have is really inefficient. The engine never completely warms, and is running pretty rich. My suggestion...walk, jog, or bike to the train. Easier on your truck, your wallet, and your heart! Sound fruity, I know...but try it.

Good luck!

See, it depends on where you drive. Out where I like to go the gas stations are few and far between and that extra capacity can mean the difference between having to carry a spare gas can (messy, smelly, dangerous) or not.

Yeah, I know I should but the tradeoff there is time, which I'm loathe to give up. Walking to the train station would mean leaving 20 minutes earlier and getting back 20 minutes later. That's 40 minutes a day I'd rather spend doing other things.

But, I've often felt that if gas prices get high enough, I'll do exactly that.

EDITED TO ADD: The bicycle is a possibility, though... They have places to chain them up at the train station and it wouldn't take me more than 5 minutes to get there.

I am getting about 18mpg, I do about half fwy and street. One thing also is that I have a 4wd so that does not help. Normaly i can expect about 280 or so in a full tank of gas. When I drove to Vegas I did over 340 in a tank of gas but it was all fwy miles.

i recently purchased my 01 SR5 2wd automatic.

in one week i got about 16 MPG all city driving 266 miles on a tank from the last fill up of 16.6 gallons

is that normal?

16-20 MPG

this was after I did my Water pump , timing belt , Royal Purple oil change & a K&N air intake system :)

Took a long trip this past weekend, all highway (except for some dirt roads near the cabin where we stayed) and my MPG broke 20 for the first time. About 20.4, IIRC.

Do 3rd gens have an 18 gallon capacity? I've filled up from empty and can never get more than 12 gallons of fuel. I'm getting about 16mpg, mostly city driving.

I haven't looked in the manual but Edmund's said 18.5. My Tacoma was the same.

One of the few things I like about the 4th gen 4runners is the 24.5 gallon tank. IMO that's the size tank every SUV should have - gives a 400+ mile range even at 17mpg.

I got a genuine 22 mpg a couple of weeks ago, of course it was mostly highway driving.

My rough observations are that my 4runner gets about 1 - 2 mpg less than my 04 Tacoma did. They both have the same engine (3.4 V6) the only difference in drivetrain is that the 4runner is an automatic. And honestly, although I don't like to see my MPG go down, I don't mind trading the convenience of an automatic for a couple of MPGs.

I have 285/75 BFG's on stock 16" wheels. I got 18.5 mpg on the trip back from Texas where I bought the truck. It was a 9 hour drive. But the K&N filter on the intake was pretty clogged up and the dipstick read over full on engine oil. I've since cleaned the filter, and changed the oil (filled it correctly). I think those two things might help a little. We'll see after this next tank of gas. Mixed city and highway driving, I'll post up when I have some numbers.

Yesterday, i was a quarter mile from the gas station and the car sputtered 2 times i pull in and fill it up to 18.6 gallons in the tank, i almost fell over on how far i drove on the gas light.
