wheel lug stud broke at 90 ft lbs on 2010 4runner

Well, I broke 2 wheel studs tonight (1 on each front wheel) while putting on my FJ Cruiser wheels. I removed the OEM wheels/lug nuts with an impact gun, but when putting on the new wheels/tires, I used a ratchet/21 mm socket to snug the lug nuts, (lowered the jack) then used my torque wrench set at 85 ft/lbs. I read this thread a couple of days ago, and realized that Harper dug up the correct torque spec (82 ft/lbs) so I assumed that 85 was OK. WRONG ! I didn't think that a couple more ft/lbs would matter, but apparently it did. OR, the OEM wheels studs are soft, weak, or if you prefer, junk. My 2010 4R has 19750 miles on it, and now wears Cooper Discoverer AT3's, LT 265/70/17 (6 ply) mounted on FJ Cruiser 6 spoke graphite powdercoated wheels. Its going in to the dealer for a 4 wheel alignment, and to replace the 2 broken studs next week. I will mention to the service writer the complaints about these wheel studs on this forum. I don't know if it will do any good tho'.
I don't think 2-3 lbs over would make a difference. Even our high dollar snap on torque wrenches at work here in the engine shop have a tolerance of +/- 3% when they get calibrated every year. Our engine manuals allow up to 5%.
We're talkin' 1/2" drive impacts can torque 4-500 in/lbs easily and the damage was done previously.Impacts are NOT allowed in a Jet engine shop.

Maybe some stud are bad from stock but I've changed my wheels at least 10 times now and never had even one break. But I warn them at the tire shop not to use an impact to put my wheels on and stand there and watch them.

Hmmmm . . . I thought the Owner's Manual called for 83 ft/lbs.

What's funny is the repair manual calls out for 82 ft/lbs or 112 nm under the torque specs section.
The owners manual calls out for 83ft/lbs or 110nm
Well converted, as they use nm here at work in these dang British manuals and we have to convert alot of the time .
112nm comes out to 82.61 ft/lbs
110nm comes out to 81.13 ft/lbs

So 82 ...83 is more then close enough.

I'll throw my expirience in. I had a tire shop snap one of my studs when installing my new tires, well when i took it to toyota to have it replaced they got in contact with corporate, kept the vehicle, and said they were directed to replaced ALL of the wheels studs. They also said they were told not to use the ones they had in stock but were overnighted an entire new set. never got an answer on why the were drected to do this though.

If thats what corporate told your dealer, then wouldn't there be a TSB or recall on the wheels studs for 5th Gen 4R's ?

Discount Tire just broke one of mine off after road force balancing the tires :bigok:

It is getting replaced tomorrow on their tab, but the plan was to pull my camper out at 7am for some fishing for the weekend. Now I have to wait until the shop opens at 8, and around 30 minutes install time. Not really happy about this. With any luck the shop will not break something else and leave me stuck here....

Get to work...It will take you about 30 minutes and you won't have to wait for DTs shop to work on it. It really isn't that hard to do on the 4runner. It is surprisingly easy to swap out the lug.

The discount tire I use broke one of mine off they set their wrench at 90lbs the reason they gave me was that toyota use a 12mm bolt when it should have a 14mm and they did that to save money, but anyways my wheels don't fall off and when they snap them oof they have to replace them so I'm good.

We have stretched or broken 8 (yes, eight) studs now at under 70ft lbs. I'm furious. The shop has never seen this, neither has Toyota. At this point it looks like I won't be camping. Awesome.

Once someone puts an impact wrench on the lugs there is a good chance they will be a problem. If one does break there is a good chance they were all damaged. Not only will the lug be damaged but the rotor could also be damaged (especially with fewer lugs). The fix is to put known quality lugs in and ONLY use a torque wrench to secure them. ARP lugs and bolts are top quality.

Another one bites the dust... \rant Just changed out the stock Duelers on the wife's 30 day old 2011 TE for Wrangler Silent Armors and wouldn't ya know it, broken stud on right rear plus two on the right front that wouldn't torque down when remounting them (all by hand, no less). Had the work done at Sears, whom I've NEVER had any issues with in 20+ years and, needless to say, it surprised me and the tech.
I've got two Xterras that I've had the wheels on and off of countless times for rotations with no problems, with and without using impacts. Looks like a trip to the dealer is in the cards on my next day off since they're not open on Sundays. What a PITA! You'd figure that on a $40k vehicle, such a simple, but important part would be a bit more robust. INCREDIBLE! / rant Ok, I feel better now.
