Wheel question

I saw the thread on all the wheels and started me drooling. Here is my question with a preface. Back in the day (when gas was 27 cents a gallon we used to use a license plate bent to prevent over spray and painted them with the tires on). Has anyone tried to do it with the tires on and if so how did you prevent overspray and how did they come out.

I've seen people use playing cards to put around the perimeter of the wheels for spraying them. I haven't done it myself, but it looks like it would work well.
