I've never had any mechanical issue from my 2003 4.7L v8 that wasn't human error, until 2 days ago. On the way to work, it started jumping like a cylinder wasn't firing. So I got the code read and sure enough it said #8 was misfiring. So I changed the plug and discovered that somehow 2 of the 4 clips that hold the air intake box closed had broken off and disappeared. Even if I had the clips, the little part that it connected to on the air box broke off so there's no way to attach it. I'm probably going to change the plugs and wires anyway because it needs to be done, but does anyone know of a cheap fix for the air box? It's a $200+ part that I don't want to have to buy. I can barely afford the plugs and wires. Could the leaking air box be causing a leak in the vacuum and cause cylinders to misfire?
Any input is much appreciated!

I would say no. All that is happening is it will suck a little more unfiltered air. Shouldn't cause any misfires. War Eagle!
 
I would hit the intake with some duct tape and pay attention to craigslist and this site for a stock intake. People occasionally upgrade their intakes and sell or give away the stock one.

As far as barely being able to afford the plugs and wires. you may own too much vehicle for your income. My recommendation is start listening to the Dave Ramsey podcast and find a part time job to get that income up. bc you own a 14 year old vehicle. more repairs are on the way.
 
My air cleaner clips rusted and fell off. I was going to go find a similar style clamp at the auto part store or junkyard and blind-rivet it on. No way in hell would I pay $200 for an air cleaner housing. Even Dave Ramsey would say that's stupid. Or just lop off that box and put a cone on it.

I hadn't even thought about here or Craigslist. I was thinking about calling a junkyard, but I'll have to do that too.

And as for being able to afford it, the car was given to me by my parents when I turned 16 and I've always paid for maintenance myself because I like working on it and saving my parents money. My parents would willingly pay for it, but I try to live off of my part time job as much as I can. But if I didn't have a safety net, I agree, I'd probably have gotten a different vehicle by now haha. But I'm genuinely appreciative of the advice! Thanks!

I don't know if I can commit to a cone yet haha. Too scared of all the problems it could cause. I think I'm going to see what I can do with some diy-ing. I was scared someone would suggest a cone or something and I'd talk myself in to it haha
 
Update: I caved in and bought a cheap code scanner from harbor freight. Since it still misfired with the new plug, I cleared the code for the #8 misfire, swapped the coils with #6, and drove. Today I finally had the check engine light come on and sure enough it said misfire #6. So relieved to know the source and not have to worry! Tomorrow I'll see if it just needs some tlc or if it needs to be replaced either way, easy fix.

As for the air box, tape is working great for now haha
