When to replace stock suspension on 14 trail premium?

Hey everyone. I bought my 4runner in July 2016. It had 38k miles on it and now it's currently sitting at 60k miles. Just wondering how long will stock suspension last?

(Justification answer for your wife): the stock suspension last only at most 2k miles and must be replaced immediately [emoji1303]

In reality though I'm sure you could get 200k plus if in somewhere where they don't salt and it's a dry climate.

I drive 1500 miles to and from school a month. That's not even including driving around doing errands haha. I want to make it into a overland rig some day. But I live in north idaho and the salt and sand during this winter has already been bad for this rig. So debating to get a new suspension set up before summer/next winter. Just was curious to when they start deteriorating. Who knows what the rig was used for before I bought it! It came from Nevada lol.

"Last" is subjective. Around here it's about 1 month. If the question is really "how long will it work properly?" ... well, you've probably got a ways to go.

In many cases you can either replace it with an 'upgrade' before or after the divorce..

if shocks are not leaking oil, they still work well, but maybe not like new. Bushing wear and springs soften but usually last much longer.

I bought my 10 with 140k on it. The stock suspension was very worn out, but it just glided over most everything like a boat. I use the word "biat@ because it floated and bobbled. Still worked, but beak the **** up. It would bottom out often on speed bumps.

I replaced it all with what I would consider mid-grade components.......and couldn't be happier. It's very controlled and well mannered.

I would imagine your stuff is still fine.

Replaced mine 3 months after I bought it. Had around 2000 miles on it.

I bought my 5th Gen Trail Edition so that I would have great on and off road performance as the vehicle came.

I suppose I'm an outlier in that I trust automotive engineers' design capability. I also don't want to be replacing new equipment components that I'm financing.

I've replaced shocks on a nissan truck before after 50,000km (30K miles) that were not leaking oil, but were definitely at the end of their lifespan. When a rear shock was removed, it could be compressed, but it took my buddy and I pulling as hard as we could to get the shock to decompress to the normal length. Dampening - gone. Prior to replacement, the ass end of the truck would go all over the place from frost heaves or expansion joints on the road.

In my area, 50,000km is a good yardstick for OEM suspension. As others have mentioned, there's plenty of variables. It's a salty, snowy mess here for 4-5 months of the year. I'd expect a much greater lifespan in the desert.

but what I mean to underline is that I wouldn't wait for leaking oil to replace suspension components. Then again, I love buying shocks and tires..... It's a character flaw

If it's not riding right, leaking, or when it's not giving you the performance you want. I lust after an ICON setup, but I really don't want to do it to this rig when I look at my long term realistic uses. It's mainly a family hauler that takes the wife to NYC and needs to fit in parking garages a few times a year. As such, I'm probably going to end up with some sturdy bumpers, a winch, lockers, and the shocks and springs to bring it back to a near factory ride.

So, what would you like to do with your rig?
