Where do you have your maintenance & repairs done? - Dealer rant

Hi All,

I know most of us don't have the best opinions of Toyota dealers based on their cost among other things. Like anyone else I hate to overpay for any service, but my biggest concern with Toyota dealers is not their cost, its the quality of work.

I still have the factory included maintenance for my 4runner so I have been taking it to the dealer...up until now. I just had the 20k service done and noticed the "protection strip" between the rear spoiler and trunk lid had torn and was coming out. The replacement part was $12 but i thought, what the hell, the vehicle is a year old and has a warranty so i decided to have the dealer do it. This strip is intended to prevent scratches from the spoiler rubbing the tailgate, theres been a thread about it before. Anyway, after having it replaced i inspect it before leaving the dealer and notice that the tech obviously used something to scrape off the old adhesive and in the process left multiple scratches on the spoiler at the contact point with the tailgate. One of the scratches was so deep i can't image it being done with anything else but a box cutter. There is also a ridge when you run your finger across the area, like the tech scraped so hard it deformed the natural curve of the specific area. Theres even a visible ridge if you look at the right angle. This wasn't there before.

The service advisor, which has always been pretty decent to work with was only concerned about the survey that i will be receiving because "he didn't do the work, so its not his fault". I was very polite but firm and they offered to have a body shop fix it. Its not a big enough deal, and you have to look for it to notice so its not worth it to me (and no one looks at the top of the truck anyway). But its the principal of the matter. I take it in to replace a small strip of material to prevent scratches and the tech does more damage than would ever occur even if the strip was not present. I'm going to tell them that i expect a replacement part, although that will never happen.

I had bad service experiences at another dealer when I owned my Tacoma and started to use an independent. However, I gave this new dealer the benefit of the doubt and it bit me in a$$. Lesson learned. They all do shitty jobs apparently.

Now, I've heard the stories of how oil changes aren't regularly done through the drain plug at the bottom of the sump, but are often siphoned out with a pump which can leave some reside in the oil system. And obviously I've had my own dealer experiences which were not good. So, where do you guys do your regular maintenance and repairs? I'm fine doing basic oil and filter changes, but am not enough of a mechanic to comfortably do the "toyota multi point inspection" and some of the more in depth maintenance that is done at longer intervals.

What do you guys do? Who do you trust to do all the maintenance and work required in accordance to Toyota's service suggestions? In your experience, are independent shops the way to go?

Seems pretty hit and miss to me. I had problems with the service department at the dealership where I bought the truck so I stopped bringing it there. Now I take it to the one by my office or the one by my place and they've both treated me well. The one by my place just replaced a loose wheel bearing under warranty, no questions asked even though I have wheel spacers.

I have done all my routine maintenance such as oil changes, filters, differential and transfer case lube changes, driveshaft grease and tire rotation myself.

However I did recently take it to the local Toyota dealer to have the transmission fluid changed. I was satisfied with the work they performed.

I also took it to Pep Boys to have the shocks (that I ordered from Shock Warehouse) installed and an alignment done.

This. In my younger days I worked at a dealership and know their good and bad. It has to be something serious for me to even think about seeking their assistance.

+ a bunch. I don't trust people to do work on vehicles that my life depends on.

vicpic58, did the dealer hesitate at all on the trans fluid change? I've been researching that and seems many won't touch it since it is 'lifetime' fluid (which I find ridiculous, and plan on changing mine somewhere between 50 and 100k miles).

Hooyah, wsmc831. I've free 2-year maintenance but I want none of it. No one packs my parachute, loads my guns or works on my vehicle because those are essential and life-depending items.

I do all of my own basic to moderate maintenance myself. For major stuff like timing belt level jobs, I go to the dealer (since my friend is a tech) or a ASE Certified Toyota tech.

The problem with going to the dealer for basic stuff like oil changes, is they don't use their real techs for jobs like those. They use minimum wage "Lube Techs" that have little skill/training/education/care, and a high turnover rate. This is why we always hear about the dealer screwing up basic oil changes, by over/under filling, using the wrong oil, stripping oil pans, not tightening the drain plug, not changing the filter, ect.

why quit there?

I used to work for a Toyota dealer and let me tell you they hire some real idiots...

I remember we had one guy drive a Sienna with 10K on it that just had it's oil drained around to the top of the shop because he didn't want to walk to get the right oil.

I got outta there asap!

I have great respect for all who prefer to do their own work or who choose a non Toyota tech to do do their work. However, for a non mechanically inclined chap like myself I have had great service from two Toyota dealerships here in the Chicago area. Honestly I have never had a bad experience and accept the extra costs inherent in dealership work

At first the service writer tried to tell me it did not need it yet at 60k miles, but when I explained that the book calls for it at 60k under the special driving section that mentions "heavy vehicle loading" he had no problem with it.

It cost $252.95 plus I rented a car for about $22.00 for the few hours that it took to get it done.

Yeah I hear you, I am getting older (55) and have gotten to where I don't like bending over the fenders to do things like changing a water pump or even changing spark plugs anymore and have reluctantly given up on that kind of stuff and will pay to have it done.

I can still do brakes and routine maintenance but will take things to a dealer or other shop when I don't feel confident doing it or just plain do not want to mess with it, like changing transmission fluid.

This is the first time I ever paid someone to change shocks, but I have never owned something with this kind of front shock set up before, so I thought it would be better to have someone else who has the proper equipment do it for me.

But it is always in the back of my mind, did they do it correctly, am I going to regret not doing it myself?

yessir. Now, I have had my share of poor dealerships, but somehow, I found a good one with my truck. I have taken it back a few times for warranty work and they have fixed it no questions asked. I have been pleased with their service and probably will not take it anywhere else. I do believe it is hit or miss, and I have been fortunate enough to find a good one. If I were a little more educated on how to do these types of things myself, I probably would, but that is certainly not my area of expertise.

I did a lot of researching on Toyotas and 4 Runners before getting serious and going to a dealer to buy it. What I didn't do was research the dealer. There are five of them in my area to choose from. I had a disappointing buying experience with mine when I wanted to add running boards where they were going to charge me triple what they should. I got it straightened out, but it left me with a real sour feeling.

I've started researching the dealers in my area now. They all get mixed reviews. I think the surveys the dealers send out are probably skewed toward being more positive than what actually happened. I know the one I did was. Because, if I didn't give all the most positive responses available, I was going to have to answer for it with the dealer and go thorough the whole situation again with them.
Based on an email from some one at the dealer, a sales manager I didn't meet, he stated, If I couldn't answer all of the positively, he wanted to talk with me first. I took this to mean, if I answered anything negatively, I would have to later discuss it with him after he gets the results. So it was easier to say they were perfect and move on.

The real reviews come from places like this where we can share our experiences. It's a shame we buy such high quality trucks, but a substantial amount of us have had poor experiences at our dealers. I would like to feel good about going back to mine knowing I'll have a good service experience; but it seems like it will be hit or miss depending on who does the work. It seems like it's this way everywhere.

There is no accountability and now one want to take responsibility when something goes wrong. This is a top down mentality that starts with management. For some reason, some employees feel they don't need to do a good job or it's okay to make mistakes or care about serving the customer. I don't know if management is afraid to address it or perhaps they also condone this type of behavior because they don't care either?

I'm still up in the air on going back to my dealer for it's 10K service. It's coming up next month and I really don't feel like getting on a cold garage floor when I already paid for it with the price of the vehicle. I may just go to my local garage, they're a large family chain of repair stores. After the Hummer dealer closed, (where I ALWAYS had a good experience), I started going to them and they ALWAYS took good care of me too.

Rant over.

It was more about the motorcycles I race than the car, but same concept. Your impression of me is of no consequence, your opinion means nothing, and you don't have the ability to make me the least bit upset.

You may continue your trolling ways in search of whatever you need to give yourself the smallest feeling of control.

I really think the dealer horror stories are overblown on internet forums. A lot of these scheduled maintenance items are not rocket science, and the dealer techs go through a formal training/certification process, so we shouldn't just assume they're all incompetent apes.

While I do like to wrench on my own cars from time to time, I think there are a lot of things a professional mechanic is actually more qualified than I to perform. I'd bet that goes for a lot of other shade tree mechanics & DIY'ers as well.
