Which floor jack

Looking for a floor jack that will lift our 3rd gens by the frame high enough to get the wheels off. My current frame height is about 17" and with the lift will be closer to 20" Most jacks I see in my area only go up to 17". What are ya'll using that isn't expensive (ie. $150 and up)?

If you are talking about from the frame on the side then you are not going to find an inexpensive unit that will do that. In all honesty you are going to be looking a pretty expensive and rather large unit to get more than 20" of lift.

I have a 3ton craftsman and it won't reach the frame on most of my rigs, what I do is lift from the axle or control arm to get it up in the air and then use a jack stand under the frame. You will also have to watch for suspension droop as well. That 20" you mention could turn into 25"-30" when you consider what it will take to actually lift a tire.

I have a hi-lift for really serious lifting, but only use it when I can't get enough with the floor jack.

If you are set on a floor jack then you should look into something like this:

Nice jack, a buddy has one (the one from HF). Just make sure the screw that holds the rod to the jack is not stripped.

arcan, found at costco and northern tool, has a real nice one as well.

Working at HF, that jack is on sale for like 68 bucks this weekend until sunday. Nation wide, it's in the Black Friday Ad. Just doesn't have the low profile metal end.

The $68 one is a little different. I was deciding between the two and went with price. The $68 jack is a 3 ton and has a lower max height. If memory serves, I think it's 18". I went with it because my truck is bone stock and 18" is more than enough to hoist it at the pumpkin and the front skid to put it on stands. Anything that would need more than that is way beyond what I could do myself at this time, anyway.

I still want one, I just think im better served taking the extra time to use a bottle jack and a few 2x4.

I'm glad all of you chimed in on the HF 23" jack. I've been eyeballing it for a long time.The last jack i had was a 4 ton (not HF) that blew it's seals and I couldn't find replacements.

Price is right on the HF one, even before a sale.

I had this same issue when lifting my T4R and I have a regular jack but I found some 12 to jack stands that have a range of 19"-30" for $40 on CL. I just lift my rig from the front crossmember or rear axle. I don't really just jacks alone while working under any car.

Thanks for all the input. I could easily get by without a lift of 20". Just figured some situations it would be nice to have as much lift as possible.

Goes up to 18.25". I used to bring my HiLift with me on trips. Now I bring this.

Obvious note: if you are going to pack this in your truck, tie it down very well. You don't want to be decapitated by this thing flying around if you get t-boned or have some other accident on the road.

I assume you wouldn't be lifting from the frame. The best place to jack up the truck is not the frame, not ever. Use the front skid plate, the lower control arms or the rear axle then place a Jack Stand under the frame. What I pack is the portable jack and a single tall jack stand.

2-ton is enough to lift half the truck. The bigger issue is whether a simple 2-ton has enough height and length to do all the lifts you may want. Does it stick out far enough so that you can work the handle enough to make it raise? A dinky one may have the handle end under the truck with no room to pump. Will it lift high enough so the wheels can droop if doing suspension work?

I switched to a 3-ton SUV jack from a 2-ton that I still use on my son's Accent. I could do most things with the little one but the big one made things a lot easier on the 4Runner.

Short version: Need? No. Preferred? yes.

I love the old Snap On (re-branded Lincoln) that I bought for $40 and put a $45 hydraulic rebuild kit in. It will outlast anything you can buy new.

Any old Lincoln, Hein-Warner, or Walker jack would be my preference all day long over something you can buy at a store. Rebuilding them isn't difficult at all.

I keep a 6 ton bottle in my 4runner with bottle jack extensions from Safe Jack that allows me to lift up to ~36". I have several of their extensions and jack pads which adds up $ but it works well, takes up less space & is A LOT lighter to carry around. I'm sure anybody that knows how to weld could make similar extensions for a lot less.

Before I got my 6 ton bottle jack with the Safe Jack extensions, I kept HF 3 ton aluminum floor jack in my 4runner which is a lot lighter than the steel version but still took up a lot of space.

I like at least a 3 ton jack - would rather not get to the edge of rated capacity. I bought this Arcan jack at Costco ($99) about 6 years ago and it has been great. It has a capacity of 3.5 ton and a lift height of 21.375". Now available at Northerntool for $129. It is all steel, very heavy which works for me as it doesn't leave my garage. I like the low profile aspect as I use it on my other cars including a Miata.

Costco had a lighter steel/aluminum Arcan model in-store this Christmas for $99 which I believe was rated 3 ton but the lift height was only about 18.5". It may be the same jack as that Powerzone in Brian's post but branded Arcan....I think they are the same company.
