Which muffler ?

thank you for the detailed post!

my fear is that the muffler will need to be cut off... What do you think? Was yours a plain in the butt to take off?

Muffler wasn't bad once disconnected from the remaining exhaust, also spray the rubber hangers with WD40 to help slide them off. Rather than laying on my back under the truck trying to cut off the rusted hardware bolting it to the tailpipe (not much space to work underneath), I quickly/simply chopped off the pipe going into the muffler (which sounds like where your's broke off) with a sawzall, then ground off the hardware when the tailpipe was out. Also had to sawzall the hardware at the muffler inlet flange, though I did that earlier this year when I replaced the catalytic converters so I already had fairly new hardware that came off easily. Those rusted bolts are tough so have a few new sawzall blades handy.

By chance do you know what the bolts are? I much rather order them, I barely have any time to go to home depot, my next available weekend is to get my 2004 timing belt done. I'm trying to get both of these cars back to tip top shape. my parents don't seem to want to take the initiative to bring their cars to the mechanic....

I'll post the hardware specs when I get to work in a few hours, found them in one of the parts bins LOL

UPDATE - I used 10mm x 1.5 thread x 50mm long bolts, nuts, and lock washers. I believe factory Toyota nuts & bolts have a 1.25mm thread pitch, but we didn't have that thread in the bins, most important thing is the 10mm diameter. You could also use slightly shorter bolts but I wanted to play it safe.

Nunyabiz, Did you install this yourself? Was it as simple as cutting the old out and clamping the new in?

I just got an ANSA direct fit after having a local muffler shop install a "stock" muffler that is louder than the one I took off. I found out from the CRW warehouse, where I bought the ANSA, that many muffler shops use universal stock mufflers. FYI

How do I find out what size bolts to replace the rusted ones holding my current muffler in place?

Just updating everyone, was able to save the muffler and tail pipe. new piece from cat to muffler was made, and everything was welded on. Is it perfect? No, its quiet and passed inspection, and probably last another 2 years. it was around 60 bucks, So I'm going to call this finished :D

Thanks all!
