Which radiator should I buy

I have a champion in my 4R, put in earlier this year. I rigged my cooler in line since it's a brand new radiator and the corrosion shouldn't be an issue since the fittings are welded on. Seems fine for me.

Thanks guys I'm leaning towards a separate cooler, I like to play it safe. I'm wondering if I should even be using the existing radiator right now due to the possibility of cracking from the crash. I've driven it about 50 yards and idled it for about 10 minutes total. I think I just might disconnect it and not let the engine run long enough to overheat, and monitor a scangauge. After I weld in a new core support I can put in the Champion.

Lot of work in that project lol

Separate coolers are not a great idea in general. The engine and transmission need similar operating temperatures and sharing a fluid cooler is one of the best ways to manage this, especially in colder climates.

Well, my Taiwan Denso looks to be developing a leak after three years and 30k miles. In other words, it lasted a whole coolant change interval.

$350 for the Japanese made Denso isn't looking so bad.

I’m not so sure it’s a good idea to run your engine without coolant. Your water pump will likely dry heave and you will not get proper temperature readings. Also the coolant does not only cool but it distributes the heat. Without cool in your head would end up with a splitting headache real quick

Why? I have not heard that before and I cannot think of a reason why they should be the same temperature? In fact it seems a little peculiar because they are two different machines.

I can imagine that integrated coolers will help the transmission warm up and also regulate the temperature under different loads.

I heard that the integrated transmission cooler in the radiator helps with warming it up on cold mornings but where I am isn't cold enough to cause any problems right now. I'll just disconnect the tranny cooling hoses from the radiator for now and run the engine cooling part of the radiator. I guess with the Scangauge I now can monitor tranny temperature so if I have to drive it somewhere I can keep an eye on it.

Good point about dry heaving the water pump and not distributing the heat around without coolant.

I did start one (see link in sig) but I lost a few posts due to the site hacking.

I'm amazed at how little damage was done. I show people pictures and they're like... "Okay... sure. If you want but I wouldn't do it." But they don't know 4runners...

Seriously only 4 major things wrong with it: 1) weld in new core support, 2) pull lower control arm bracket straight and get alignment, 3) replace windshield, 4) new hood. I already bought one from Certifit for $100, with a hood scoop. Then minor things: replace other bits on the front that I already have, bolt on replacement fender that I already have, and optional and only needed to make it look nice: put on new bumper. The old bumper is still fully functional an undamaged except for the edge that bent. Mounting brackets undamaged.

Original Stock Radiator?

Post a pic of the top tank, specifically any markings or stickers

Reviving this thread. Can anybody tell from this photo if this is an original stock radiator. It does appear to be on the olive drab side, sakoluvr especially in this pic, but that seems to be more from age than anything else

I've been planning on replacing it since I bought it last November to avoid the milkshake which I experienced on my last 4R (to the tune of $2700).

I'd also like to know how that Toyota 16400-75181 Radiator worked out for IronBalaclava. Worth the price in your opinion?

If its that color, it is probably pretty old - they all start black. The letters/numbers in that picture are a description of the plastic type used on the tank (polyamide/nylon 66, 25% glass fiber reinforced), not a part number.

Does Toyota still sell that radiator with the material break down number stamp or have they completely transitioned to the Denso Taiwan units?

That radiator in the photo looks like the same radiator that's in my 1998 4runner Limited and I purchased it new. I'm looking to replace mine. It's not leaking but i think it's time. I would like to get the original Japanese replacement but the Toyota 16400-75181 is only listed for 2001-2002 year models and says it won't fit my model year. The Tiawanese Toyota 16410-YZZAJ is listed for my year and also for 1996-2002. Does anyone know why the OEM Japanese radiator won't fit my vehicle?

I'm sure someone on this forum knows better than I do, but I would guess the Toyota 16400-75181 will fit your rig. Maybe the parts site you're looking at just doesn't have that part cross-referenced. Even if it's not a direct fit, it would probably only take some minor modification, like maybe a spacer or longer bolt.
Have you tried plugging in your VIN to PartSouq to get exploded parts diagram and #'s?

I am looking into a mishimoto radiator. Specifically, TOYOTA 4RUNNER REPLACEMENT RADIATOR, 1996-2002 MODEL: R1998-AT

Has anybody on here had any experience with these?

Curious on where these are made and the warranty seems to be lifetime

I have no experience with these, but they seem to be the same design and materials as an OEM Denso radiator for more money. I'd go with Denso if I was you.

mishimoto based in delaware has been around since 2003 and they are primarily distributors but also do engineering they don't manufacture their own products. I ve replaced my oem with oem but denso is a good brand also.

New radiator issues

Hi guys
I replaced my OE radiator after 280K miles, with a Denso unit, made in Taiwan, purchased from the Toyota dealer.
Prior to the replacement I had no issues whatsoever, no overheating, it was a preventative replacement due to mileage.
We took a trip to Mammoth Lakes, and when stopped, the coolant overflow tank was boiling over. We’ve done that trip numerous times before and never had a problem with the OE radiator.
While in Mammoth I purchased a new radiator cap, but the problem did not get any better.
The temperature gauge never went over half but the coolant kept boiling over and had to add to keep the radiator full.
I nursed it back home, with a few stops to add coolant, never overheating.
I suspect a bad radiator neck that will not seal.
Anyone had any issues with this?

99 SR5 4WD, had new after market heads installed about 35k ago, new factory water pump, hoses and T-stat.
No coolant leak visible.
Still have to pressure test the system to confirm no leaks.
Thanks
