Which Tires for 20" Wheels?

Hi all, first time post here but i am a regular on TacomaWorld.

I have a 2005 taco, but i put the 20" 4runner wheels on it, and i absolutely LOVE the look. 34" BFG TA KO Tires and the combo is great.

My question is what agressive tires do people run with these rims? I need to keep an agressive look but also want a lighter tire (34"BFs are heavy and reduce my performance and MPG). I've been leaning toward Duratracs (they have an SL load tire thats about the right size) but i've heard bad things about not being able to keep them balanced and since it's such a narrow rim i think it could be a problem.

Any advice and/or pics are appreciated....

20 in Wheels on the Limited

The wheels like you mentioned already are pretty narrow being only 7". Officially a lot of options are ruled out because manufacturers are usually recommending at least a 7.5" wide rim for the popular sizes of AT tires. Unofficially, that being said there are a lot of members on here running some nice aggressive tires on the 20s and no one has had a story yet of popping a bead that ends in fiery death, YMMV.

Be warned as well that a lot of tire shops might give you some pushback on mounting tires that are too wide on 7" wheels, recently one member here even had a new free narrower set given to him from a shop when they realized they mounted a set years earlier that should have been on a 7.5" set.

I have seen most of those posts, but they're kinda old and was hoping for some newer more current discussion on this. Thanks for the tips though... the BFs on there now were used when i got them, perfectly worn, and still are after about 7000 miles. So now i dont personally think that mounting a min 7.5" tire on a 7" rim is a bad thing. I also tow a 4000 lb boat and lots of other heavy stuff and its all good! But the BF's are getting worn and i need to look for new tires, just really hoping for some new tire that i havent discovered myself yet!

I did have to get a BMC done in order to make them fit though. BUT I REALLY like the look

HOT DAMN that's a good lookin runner. Have you had any problems with uneven wear or balancing & shaking problems? how many miles on them? Just trying to make sure i dont end up with some bad tires... on the TacomaWorld forums some people have reported really bad experiences with Duratracs, and i feel we are more prone to these issues if we mount them on our narrow wheels

I have read the TacomaWorld forums and I have read these forums. Let's just say I would trust this forum for correct advice and product experience.

Old posts most of the time have more and better information here. Once a topic has been brought up a dozen times then the guys who had/have the most experience with that topic don't post because they have said it before several times.

If you go back and read those threads that were linked above you will see they basically say do it at your own risk. Many have done fine, a few have not. We can't keep you from getting a bad tire though. I don't know why you "Feel" more prone to problems because of a narrower wheel. "Feel" is not a technical term nor is it data or a citation from another source. Good luck.

The reason I "feel" this is due to the "fact" that they don't recommend mounting that size duratrac on a 7" wheel. No one in the other posts has mounted this tire on these wheels, so i am asking him what his experience has been. Since none of the other posts can tell me this, this thread is better than the others to get the information that my specific inquiry calls for.

Thanks for the props! I have about 20k miles on them and have had no issues at all. Tried Nittos and a few others before settling on these. Love the aggressive tread pattern. I FEEL like these are the best for me and my rig.

These are actually a pretty good alternative. I had Discount offer to give me a free set of these once they realized that they should not have mounted my Duratracs on my factory rims.

I like the way those rims look a lot more on your truck then on the 4runner... for what its worth.

Yeah. The next time I go to a design meeting to talk about critical dimensions I will just tell them "I feel" like it will work. That should make you happy next time you go across a bridge or up in an elevator or hit your brakes on your vehicle right? That the engineer who designed that stuff didn't do any calculations because he "felt" like it was right huh? Crap like that is why people can seldom get a decent answer to a question. So he wants an opinion because he felt like it could wear funny. Never mind the tire OEM engineers recommend rim width to tire size solely for safety and not anything to do with wear but he feels like wear could be an issue. Now you come back and say no problems in 25K miles. Well there's a big data point! A guy who cares more about how his vehicle looks is talking about performance. It's not like the original thread links posted above don't give many more data points. You want to pick a fight with me that's fine by using smug entendres and innuendos but you will have to do better than that pathetic attempt above. Unlimited my ass.

Toyo Open Country A/T II

I have 20x9 wheels, but after a year and 20Kmi I've been happy with my 43lb Toyo Open Country A/T II P275/60R20s, which are spec'd for 7.5-9.5" rims. Pics on my Garage if you'd like to see. I'd have gone larger than 33" if I could fit them in without new UCAs & a BMC up front.

I too haul a good-sized boat regularly, occasionally other loads, and they've been great for that.

They may not look as aggressive as others on here run, but they've been great offroad, ride quiet & smooth on the blacktop, and I can't imagine they hurt my MPG as much as comparably-sized LT/10-ply 60lb+ tires would.

the silver ones have a more pronounced rim its just that its black and not silver like the OEM's.
