Just bought a used motor I am tearing down. I am new Toyota.
Which tool do I need to remove the head bolts and the connecting rod bolt nuts?

Just regular sockets. For the head, look at the FSM or a chiltons and make sure you break torque in the proper sequence. Then for the connecting rods, use regular sockets too. Lefty loosey rightey tightey.

Congratulations, you just solved your own mystery--ever hear of 12-point sockets? Normally considered inferior to their 6-point brethren, now they get to be the tool of choice. Often used for head bolts, flywheel bolts, etc..
