Whistle NOISE??? am I losing it, not really

Well, I was planning on going to the dealer today regarding this whining noise, plus to get a Quality Inspection performed (verify what TSBs have been performed), etc. Of course, the whining noise has subsided for now.

Another question regarding the little tray w/ 12v power supply next to the gear shifter. The spring-loaded door does not allow the door to remain closed. Would this be covered under a warranty? Just curious to how petty warranty issues can be.

My 95 has a whistling noise and it is less noticeable if I move the recirculate lever to pull air from the outside.

If you have, you should get a whirling noise. Well, when you get off the gas at 60mph, the sound everyone is describing should go away.

Considering the placement of the Air intake, and the fact that its in the front of the passanger wheel well, I make the hypothesis that the whisteling noise is infact a combination of air going into the intake and the way the air physically travels across the intake screen. The grid acts as a large whistle, kinda like a flute, and while we are used to blowing air through the front, in the case of instruments, I think the air being sucked in by our motor generates a harmonically annoying sound.

I'm getting a whistling noise from the black wind deflector thats up while the moonroof is open at speeds 50-60....any fixes for this?

Copper it's funny you mentioned that because I thought mine got quieter when I played with recirculate.

If this is the case then it may be from slight air leakage at a window or door. when the sunroof is closed is it all the way up in its' set position?

One thing to check is your rubber weather stripping around the doors...keep'em clean and soft (silicon spray, 303, silicon dielectric grease, etc...)

This may take trial and error.
as a starting point have you added anything to the vehicle before the noise appeared? Try removing the roof rack crossbars, use masking tape and cover the outside seems to the doors and take her for a ride.

To everyone who says the noise might be related to the A/C:
There's a TSB for '04-'05 Sequoia, Tundra, and Sienna for the air blower motor. You'll notice a whining noise only when the fan is on "Lo" speed and the radio is turned down. Doesn't matter if the A/C is on or not, recirc is on, or heat is on. Faster fan speed drowns out the noise. Although I'm not aware of any additional TSB's, I know this also affected the '04 Lexus RX330.
At first I thought I was a bad timing belt on the car next to me in traffic, but the noise followed me! After much trial-and-error, I found the root cause.

i have it too, starts at 65mph, goes through to 75mph. i just assumed it was those crappy dunlops.

my whistle noise is for sure that black deflector...as I was going 65mph, I pushed it down with my hand...whistle gone...now I just need to figure out how to keep my hand up there while cornering

I hate even posting this.....because it doesn't sound like the common fix for all these "whistling noises,"

My 05 had a distinct whistle right around 90 km/h. Only there, or a few km/h above or below, and at that speed only under a very light load/throttle opening. If it wasn't at such a common speed for the highways around here, I probably would have left weel-enough alone, but it was definetly annoying.

After pissing around with every wind-related, we finally traced it as accurately as possible to the rear diff actually....just like harmonics at that particular speed for whatever reason. Anyways, replaced the diff under warranty and the noise was gone.

Problems with this include:

- All the crap that was taken off/put back on in order to replace the diff could have played a roll.
- It would be VERY expensive not under warranty....I would definetly have left it alone if that was the case.
- Even under warranty, the service team at any given dealership my have difficulty tracing it to this problem....it wasn't easy.
- For my 4R, this noise was present from day 1, 0 km's on the odo. If you have developed a noise over some years/miles, I would suspect many other items (tires, weather-stripping, seals, etc) before the diff.

Toto, got any details on those TSBs or what you did to stop the noise? I've had the exact "only on low" fan noise in my '03 off and on for the past few years. Until last week on the way back from Disney when it became just on and has been ever since.

Since it's in the same area, can anyone tell me where to look for the A/C drain hose? Wife said she felt something wet hit her feet when I made a left turn the other night. Figure it's a blocked drain line, but have been too lazy to crawl under and look for it.

I don't have any of the TSB's handy, but I do remember that the problem was the bearing on the HVAC fan motor, and the solution was to replace the motor.

Bummer. I was hoping it was just some appropriate form of lubrication or an adjustment like this thread I found for a 2006 Taco.

Alright so before I get flamed I can say that my situation might be different than the rest.....

FWIW, my whistling does come from my AC VENTS!!!! It is strange because it appears to come from the center of the vehicle behind me, but for sure it is the VENTS!

Here the scenario:

Auto Temp set to 65, 4R sitting in sun when I get in it.....

Fans kick in on high, and whistling begins....

Wife gets in and OPENS her CENTER FRONT VENT for AIR and WHISTLING STOPS!

I asked her, "Hey how did that vent get turned off?", She replies, "I turned it off the other day when you were freezing me!"

I tried this on again off again several times and I know it is simple but this is my Air Guitar for sure!
