I will say I didn't go in Micky's Hot Tub or The Escalator... however... Now I'm REALLY wondering if I NEED a rear locking diff. Thoughts?

not necessary but good to have... I don't wheel as hard as you do but I am still getting it installed. Way gentler on tires and environment.

It's certainly nice to have. There's a ledge on Switzerland trail that I was able to just turn on the locker and crawl up slowly and the open diff guys had to use some momentum with a good amount of wheel spin. I definitely like having the option if I need it.

Im in the same boat. It was crazy what I was able to do open diffs in moab buuutttt a locker could open up a lot more possibilities and it would be nice to have the security there if you need it in a pinch.

True, I didn't think about being easier on tires. I chunked mine pretty good, but they're also 7 years old and started to get pretty dry rotted/cracked.

24 hours each direction haha, we did 5000 miles in 10 days. It's an amazing place though. Check my build if you want to see the full trip report!

Yeah, it would be great for peace of mind and to save tires, but it's not up as high on my priorities as it once was.

Depends on how hard of lines you want to take. Nobody is going up rock chucker on metal masher in a 3rd gen with open diffs. I say nobody. I'm sure somebody has, not the point.

been there done that, having dual cases allows you to just idle over stuff..i like crawling too

Love that trail. I wheel like that all the time. My buddy broke his rear lower control arm in half in his "locked" 2012 FJ and 3" lift that he said was way more "capable" than my open diff 4runner. I had no damage. Lol

Gauging the need for a locker based on the traction available in Moab is pretty foolish. There are very few places that you'll have that kind of traction when wheeling.

OP, next time you're at Chinaman's take a walk up Carnage Canyon to see where front and rear lockers are a requirement.

Moab + Colorado + PNW....though


I totally looked at Carnage Canyon, no IFS rig could do it in my opinion --- a jeep with 40"s opted not to try when we were there.

I'd love to be able to run Moab!
It all depends what kind of trails or wheeling you want to do.
I'm impressed what you can do in a rig with open diffs.
I had a 4cyl 2nd gen on bald 31's, and when my wife and I first started dating, we took a trip up to browns camp. That was easily the most fun I had ever had in a vehicle. I was shocked how well it did.

The answer is: relatively speaking, in the vast world of 4wheeling....what you've got pictured isn't really that hard. Yes, it's far beyond what most "SUV" owners and soccer moms will ever even attempt....but it's still not even close to trails/obstacles where lockers are going to be absolutely mandatory equipment.
