Who else wheels this hard in open diffs?

Wait, so you don't go wheeling with people with open diffs precisely so you won't have to see their tires potentially dig in the dirt? Yes. Ive wheeled with people that had open Diffs, but they are very respectful of the environment/trail, and picked better lines.

Or they hold you up because they can't get over obstacles? Now you're trying to put words in my mouth (so to speak lol) but you're really reaching here. Grow up. No wonder 4wheelers/off-roaders get a bad rep. Im done.

Regardless open diffs do contribute to it. On terrain like that no matter how careful you wheel you're going to slip a tire at some point where with a locker it is less likely. And when you slip that tire it loosens up the ground making it easier to wash away. Do that with a few dozen rigs and it just gets worse. That's why the trails get closed is because of the degradation over time from weather open diffs and locked rigs.

I definitely agree with what others have said though that selectable lockers are a good thing to have

Regardless someone telling me trails close due to open diffs is ridiculous. I think you get my point. I follow every trail rule known. Guess no open diffs on trails is new news to me.

The point you missed is that in Moab there's almost endless traction. With one in the air you're still going to make forward progress via the other three.

open diffs mean lots of wheel spin, which means tearing up the terrain, VERY bad news. Thats what gets our trails CLOSED...

That's a half truth at the very best.

Erosion, trail braids, etc., may well cause closures and those closures may well be partially caused by unlocked vehicles....but locked ones dig ruts too....they just tend to dig them in pairs.

Fully agree with you on that, Ive seen fully locked rigs do just as much if not more damage. And the harder the trail the better. Keeps the people that dont know what they're doing out. As long as people arent leaving their trash out there or being totally inconsiderate of the damage they are causing I dont have a problem with it. Let the trails change, its part of the challenge.

And I don't even mind if they're "holding up" our group....provided we all knew they would struggle a bit and need our help. Now, being a trail tampon for other users is unacceptable and I'd agree that one shouldn't be on a trail that is beyond the level of mechanical capability of a particular vehicle.

One thing we should all keep in mind though.....the more "exclusive" a trail becomes, the more likely it will be to get shut down b/c very few people care about having motorized access to it. Therefore, what we should really be doing in this thread and out on the trail is encouraging others to push the limits of their rigs, become better drivers, get more experience and mod their vehicles as appropriate for the type of wheeling they like to do. That eventually means they'll be locked f/r.....that or we'll all move to electric vehicles with individually driven wheels and no diffs to even worry about.

Join COVCO whether you are in a club or not.

Get your annual OHV stickers. I have my own gripes about this as we do have licensed vehicles and already pay taxes on those plates but buying these stickers shows we are there and goes to help keep trails open.

Pack out other people's trash. No you shouldn't have to but do it anyway.

If you see Forest Service / Rangers stop and say thanks and be respectful.

Be an advocate every time you are out.

Since I've done trail advocacy for so long I'll simply chime in that without trails the fun stops for us all locked or not.

Get involved. Joining a 4wd group and doing adopt-a-trail with them is a good start even if you don't get too involved with them. Even if you only have a handful of guys you can also adopt-a-trail on your own.

Join COVCO whether you are in a club or not.

Get your annual OHV stickers. I have my own gripes about this as we do have licensed vehicles and already pay taxes on those plates but buying these stickers shows we are there and goes to help keep trails open.

Here it's the opposite, if you don't drive it you lose it in a couple years from overgrowth. I don't like trail damage but yahoos are going to wreck it regardless if they have a locker or not, the idiots spinning out and making a mess probably wouldn't even know what the button does.

A couple weeks ago I wrecked the edge of my lawn trying to back up the driveway from the lane and went a bit on the muddy grass because I was trying to avoid the cat shit from the downstairs tenants that fell out of their garbage can on pickup day.

I had no weight on the back and no locker. I spun out. I dug out the grass. I made a rut. It eroded away with the rain. I WRECKED MY LAWN!!!!!!

Agree with everything but the OHV sticker program.....I'm jaded by AZ's "Copper State Sticker" program a while back.....

NFS and BLM are notoriously underfunded.....that means no money for even signage to close trails, let alone enforce the closures. What the Copper State Sticker program did here was give them the funds to come out and close the trails and then enforce that closure.

Luckily, the CSS was done away with here. YMMV....but from my vantage point, giving the government more control of things is rarely a good answer.

Well it's certainly a solid opinion and I will admit in all the years of this I have seen programs and money that were supposed to benefit us do the opposite. Lots of promises broken for sure. But, I think at this point I'm in support with the way the funds are routed...currently.
