Ok - search function won't let me find CB (word length too short) and nothing comes up under citizen band.

Any links here for CB instals into 4th Gen?

What radio are you using?

What accessories are you using eg external speaker, aerial, powermikes, boosters etc.

In Oz we used AM, UHF and VHF - what is the most common used here in US for offroad?

CB?

I used one when I was a kid, just for laughs.... I thought only truckers still used them today.

Everyone has a cell phone these days, so who is going to bother with a CB to communicate?

We use Motorola Talkabouts... Nearly as good range as a CB and portable. Besides, most of the Talkabouts these days also have the weather bands so you can get the forecast if you are camping out. Cell phones are there but depending on the terrain, may be unreliable. I'm not even sure if the park services still listen to CB anymore...

Most off-roaders use CB due to lack of service in back country and is better for open discussions about routes while on the move.

When we went to Anza Borrego as a group the FRS was great for open discussions. Dave (Campen) and Will (Splat) provided some interesting facts about the area as we were driving. Cell phones cound not do this conveniently (unless you used conference call).

If you check out YT you'll see many guys have CB, either handheld or fixed.

Given that most electrical stores (eg Best Buy, Fry's etc) sell CB they must still have strong sales.
 
CB's range is far superior to FRS with a proper setup. MOst guys mount a good external antenna on their trucks. I only have a handheld CB, which works great if everybody else has external antennas.

I just bought an magnetic mount external antenna from Radio Shack, just a temp solution till I can get my whole thing sorted out.

I have a CB similar to this one, bought it from Lance. WHat is nice is that now I can mount it inside running of the lighter socket and external antenna (hope recption is better) or just plug in battery pack and little antenna and use as handheld (handy for spotting sometimes).

I've been looking for a CB solution but FRS radios should be fine and it's cheaper, easier to use and no installation involved. The problem is that all other 4wheeler clubs use CBs.

ps. You can search for cb by typing " cb* " (w/o quotes). Yotatech also has a few threads on cbs and installations.

I still like having a CB radio for long trips. Even with a radar detector, the CB comes in handy. It's amazing what you can learn from the truckers about what's coming up down the road.

Plus, I get tired of listening to music on long trips (10+ hours). The chatter on the CB can be very entertaining.

Thanks for the tip about "cb*" - I hadn't seen that before. I'll try.

Unfortunately the YT threads don't have much on 4th Gen. CB setups - well no threads I've found so far - your right there are a few (read many);):
 
That's how I was thinking of installing the antenna during my research. Firestik has a mount that works just like THIS. Just the antenna part of my cb solution was about $90. I was getting the antenna, mount, cable and quick disconnect. Then another $100 for the Cobra 75. Not a cheap solution but if you're gonna do it, might as well do it right.

One other thing about cbs on trails is that you can call for help if someone gets injured.

Nope, wasn't joking. I'm not an off-roader. I drive on the road and like the rest of the on-roaders, I just use my cell phone.

Well 04s first post clearly states what is the most commenly used comms method in the US for Offroad, as he is from the land downunder.

Maybe I'm not the only one with a reading comprehension problem ;)

IM interested in a CB set up in my 4 R. Has anyone used the "cell Phone" look alike antennas? I like the looks of them better than the magnet or the fiberglass antennas.
