Who's running an K&N in their V6?

The wife has been driving the 4runner for the last year and we went to a friends house for dinner last night and took her truck. I noticed that it felt very sluggish compared to what i remember. When i got home i checked the air filter and decided it was pretty gross and it's probably a good idea to change it. The truck has 31k on it and is still on the original filter.

I was at autozone today about to buy a new air filter and i noticed that for $23 i could get a fram paper filter or for $45 i could get a K&N.

I kinda scratched my head thinking the paper filter was priced way to high.........

Regardless i picked up the K&N. I'm going to install it tonight along with some new Bosch Icon wiper blades.

How many of you guys are running K&N filters? do you notice any type of HP or gas mileage difference?

Also, on another note, can anyone tell me what the hell that huge white mass is in front of where the air filter goes? It looks like another filter after the filter.......can i take that out?

personally, id stay with a dry filter,(one that doesnt need to be oiled) some guys have had the oil foul things up (the MAF) on theyre t4r, some others have not.

I have had a K&N on my V6 since 30,000. I now have 46,000. Never cleaned it yet. .5 increase in gas mileage.

Damn, thats nice. I picked up a new fram filter the other day for 20 some odd bucks. Never had any issues. Been running these filters since i got the truck. No noticable increase in MPG

I've been using K&N since a week after I bought my T4R. Very happy with them.

You can get in trouble over-oiling these when you clean & re-oil them, just remember, "a little dab will do ya". Just get a small, fine mist sprayer & spritz a little of k&N's oil on it after cleaning, let the filter material absorb it.

The other device you ask about is a hydrocarbon filter, and emissions control device intended to prevent evaporative emissions. There's a thread about it here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?t=50342

X2, the MAF is very sensitive to the oil that it releases and the extra debris that it lets pass.

Unplug the batter so the ECU resets.

I had a K&N drop in filter before i bought AFE's pro dry s filter.. i like it better

I also took off the hydrocarbon filter as well

Last October I bought a Fram Air Filter at Walmart for my 4Runner for $12.47.

I guess the price for the V6 Filter is a LOT more than the V8 or the filters in general have gone dramatically since then or autozone is hosing people on the price.

Another reason for the V6 filter being so much more is that the V6 filter uses more meterial and is not as mainstream as the V8 filter. The V8 filter can be intrerchanged with many more imports and Toyotas. I know that the 4.7 uses the same filter as my Camry.
