Why is auto transmission so heavy in my 94?

I know why an auto is heavier than a manual, but why is the auto trans in my 94 heavier than it needs to be. I just had the rear main seal replaced. My mechanic (who is a good friend of mine), told me my trans is one of the heaviest he has encountered. Which I though was weird because I always thought 4runners were suppose to be a light weight truck. Any one know why this is? I am thinking about replacing it with a manual trans, have any of you done this in a gen 2 runner?

An auto trans is much more complex than a manual, there's a whole lot more steel inside it, so it weighs more.

As far as swapping the auto for a manual, Search, it comes up quite often and there plenty of info around on it.

It took 2 strong guys and a floor jack to get mine in the bed of a pickup. I am slowly learning to warm up to the auto in my 89 , not as much wear and tear on my on my left knee and right hand and arm, but....what a pig with the gas.
