I'm actually surprised to see this on the website, with the lower chin spoiler, side skirts, and rear bumper I would have expected it to impact the approach/departure angles at the very least.
Why is the Limited called a Limited?

If this is directed at me (the op) I have a Limited and love it. I removed most of the low hanging plastic trim on front and rear and removed the side skirts, added rci gas tank skid, put spacer lift on front and have 275/70/17 KO2 tires. I off road in the desert a lot. We just got back from a trip yesterday.I feel you really don’t want an answer, you just want to hate on Limiteds.
It’s the “luxury” trim package. IE all the fancy stuff like fulltime 4wd, push button start, dual climate control, smart door handles, up/down buttons on rear window, upgraded stereo, leather/sunroof standard, etc etc...
And to be honest, an SR5 and Limited sit at the same height and have similar clearance. Yes the Limited has some bulkier body panels... but that doesn’t prevent it from going off road. Tons of people mod Limiteds, myself included, and mine does everything a TRD Pro could do. Shit half the people on here don’t even go off-road, they just want a mall crawler that looks good.

Because it is not AWD. It is 4WD with a transfer case that allows high and low gear range with full-time 4WD and part-time 4WD.

The Limited just switches between full time hi-range and full time lo-range.
It's always on with a 40/60 split in H during regular driving.
Since the FJC had something similar, I have no idea why you can't get a locking rear diff with that setup.

The Limited is AWD, with a locking CDL (4x4), and a high/low transfer case. There is no 2WD mode unless you have a 2WD only truck (not 4x4 equipped).
You've proven my point about this being confusing to a lot of people, lol!

Only a limited amount of people think they actually look good.
I think we are getting into semantics. Here's how I would define...
AWD- (think Toyota Highlander) FWD bias with some way to send power to the rear wheels (no transfer case and no 4LOW).
Part time 4WD- (think 4runner TRD Off-road) 2WD only (rear wheels) until power is sent to the front from a transfer case. (4LOW is also available)
Full time 4WD- (think 4runner Limited) always 4HI (through a trasfer case) with the option to "lock" 4HI. (4LOW is also available)
I would NOT call the Limited "AWD", but again, sematics.

"Full Time 4WD" is a term that exists only in Toyota marketing materials...it's AWD for Toyota's. Here's a pic of a Matrix 4WD so anyone with some spare time can explain how it's not AWD...

I'm definitely one who is confused by it all. I just bought my first 4runner and it feels way more like front wheel drive/4Hi/4Low to me than any other 4wd I have ever owned. I've owned 6 Werock comp buggies, about 10 Jeeps, 3 1 ton 4wds, and even an AWD Honda CRV. The limited drives more like every front wheel drive only car than any other 4wd I've ever owned. I've been trying to find a good explanation of each shifter setting and haven't seen much. I'm slowly learning the search functions of this forum, and looking to see what difference the center lock actually makes. If I was going to really wheel it, I would swap in an Atlas and 609s.
More semantics. The Toyota Matrix is AWD (even though it says 4WD on the emblem). 2009 Honda CRV had a sticker that said "AWD". 2010 Honda CRV had an emblem that said "4WD". It was the same exact system, honda just decided to change what they call it. Semantics.
To me, AWD is for crossovers (Honda CRV, Toyota Rav4, Matrix, Highlander, etc.). 4WD means you have a transfer case and a 4LO option. That's why I think the 4runner Limited is 4WD and not AWD. (Even though all wheels are driven at all times)

Toyota, (and Honda as you've pointed out), use AWD and 4WD interchangeably. They are the same thing, and have nothing to do with whether the vehicle is equipped with a high/low transfer case.

You can switch the transfer case to 4H or 4L. You can also lock the CDL, which is part of the transfer case, which locks it into part-time 4WD.
I've played alot with these, even put the same type transfer case (from a Sequoia) in my old Tundra to make it FT 4WD before moving into Land Cruisers. It had a 2wd option as well, just like the 4th Gen 4runner V6.

What does full-time 4WD and part-time 4WD mean to you? I think this is a big part of the communication issue. That doesn't make sense to me, to call "Full Time 4WD" = AWD and "Part Time 4WD = 4x4.
4WD means AWD to me. 4X4 means center diff is locked, power is being sent 50/50 to the front and rear axles. 4WD can't equal 4x4, as no driveline has the CDL locked all the time, or "Full Time".
Toyota and Lexus marketing uses "Full Time 4WD" to describe the driveline in AWD vehicles when the CDL is not locked, so I'm not sure what you mean when you say "part time 4WD", there is no part-time 4WD on the Limited trim.
Sequoia's have a part time transfer case, do they not? Where you have options of 2WD, or 4x4 (CDL locked)? I'm not super familiar with the Sequoia's though, it's possible they had a Limited trim that was similar to the GX470's, 4Runner Limited's, etc.
I hope I've explained things clearly, but I've got lots of spare time right now if not, lol.

Haha, full time 4wd is when the CDL is unlocked. When locked, it is part-time. 4x4 is synonymous with 4wd.
Part time 4WD means you only use the 4WD part of the time, i.e., not to be driven on drive paved roads. This is basic stuff.
It isn't a communication issue, it is an issue with lack of understanding by you. Research this and you will agree.

Part time 4WD means you have the choice between 2WD and 4x4 (CDL locked), Full time 4WD means you have the choice between AWD and 4x4 (CDL locked).
As these trucks can't be operated in 2WD, they don't have a "part time 4WD" mode. You're right in that this isn't tricky stuff, but it does seem to confuse people.

With the CDL locked the 4WD system is exactly the same and operates as part-time 4WD. The difference, is with the CDL off, you can drive using 4WD full-time. The multi-mode on the Sequoia and V6 4th gen 4Runner offers 2wd as well as part of the system. Not sure why Toyota went away from it on the 4Runner.
