Why is the Limited called a Limited?

With the CDL locked the 4WD system is exactly the same and operates as part-time 4WD. The difference, is with the CDL off, you can drive using 4WD full-time. The multi-mode on the Sequoia and V6 4th gen 4Runner offers 2wd as well as part of the system. Not sure why Toyota went away from it on the 4Runner.

The 5th gen Limited has a full time transfer case, which is fundamentally different than a part time transfer case. There is no "part time mode" on a vehicle that has full time 4WD. There's AWD, and 4x4 when the CDL is locked.

You're just using the terminology wrong, and that's a you problem.:sorry:

I'm definitely one who is confused by it all. I just bought my first 4runner and it feels way more like front wheel drive/4Hi/4Low to me than any other 4wd I have ever owned. I've owned 6 Werock comp buggies, about 10 Jeeps, 3 1 ton 4wds, and even an AWD Honda CRV. The limited drives more like every front wheel drive only car than any other 4wd I've ever owned. I've been trying to find a good explanation of each shifter setting and haven't seen much. I'm slowly learning the search functions of this forum, and looking to see what difference the center lock actually makes. If I was going to really wheel it, I would swap in an Atlas and 609s.

It feels like a FWD because it has no power... Even the 2WD RWD 4Runner feels like a FWD.

Compared to my 4th gen, the 5th gen 4Runner feels like it is perpetually in the wrong gear, all the time.

Try a Sprint Booster, it works wonders with respect to that.

I knew someone was going to recommend that as soon as I posted it... I just wanted to wait and see for myself lol.

I do appreciate the tip and am aware of that option, I don't care about it enough to actually go out and buy one...

It was mostly a jab at Toyota for a poor software tune. They literally could have included a "sports mode" button that does the same in software without the need for 3rd party wizardry.

I guess Toyota is wrong then. See #3. The multi mode that the 4th gen 4runner V6 and current Sequoia have the same transfer case as the current limited 4Runner with the addition of 2wd.

#3 is FULL TIME 4WD with 2wd, pt 4wd (when CDL is locked) and FT4wd. The current 4runner just got rid of the 2wd option.

According to you this is wrong. Yes, the 4Runner Limited is always in 4wd, but with the CDL locked, you are in part-time mode.

The 4Runner is not AWD. AWD is a completely separate system that does not have a 4L option.

That guys Limited TRD Pro build is the coolest $hit I’ve seen on this site in a while. Somehow both a very terrible and yet incredibly bad ass idea.

I would have opted for the limited model, but I cannot see spending money to replace the wheels and tires. Never liked the bigger low profile setup.

I was going to buy a TRD off road instead of the limited. Either way, I still would have purchased a lift, wheels and tires anyways.

TRD bumpers and hood is mainly cosmetic as I got tired of the limited chrome and always liked the TRD look. Parts and paint wasn’t there bad, the fun part was installing it myself .. it was price less.

Modding cars is not for everyone and I get respect that

No worries. If I was on a mission and knew that I would be replacing new stuff I may have gone for the limited model. I purchased the trail premium knowing that it only needed tires to take me nearly anywhere.

Rims and tires are literally the least complicated hurdle to tackle.

If you stick with OEM Toyota rims, they are dime a dozen... I picked up a set of 5 FJ rims for $300
