badges automatically increase horsepower by 30+ and Toyota won't be having gains like that on their trucks.

I wondered the same thing, I don't think a small 4x4 on the back liftgate would insult anyones sensibilities and yet it's not there.
I would think the only time it could ever be an issue would be an AWD Limited in a towing situation with an owner or tow truck driver who wasn't paying attention.

Funny, but in 3+ years of ownership, this question has never crossed my mind.
Now that it has, I guess my answer is "what's the point"?
I quick trip to pep boys will fix this.
The 4x4 emblems are right next to the fender vents and windshield sprayer leds.

I agree. There is alot of hate for the badges. Who know why, i personally do not care, however it is a good question. My other 4runners have had it, not sure why this one don't.
I can see if you are shopping for a 4runner, and you don't want to have to press your ham against the window to check for a 4x4 shifter, or squat and look for CVs to tell if you are looking at a 4x4 or not...I get it.
If you like the 4x4 badge, get a 4th gen one from your local dealer.
It seems to be in the same area as people pointing out features they wished the 4Runner had, or options the 4Runner had but have since not been offered... people come out of the woodwork to explain that the 5th Gen is perfect as is, and those who question should be stoned.
I can't see how a small removable 4x4 badge would offend people, I can understand why someone would be confused that the 4Runner doesn't have one.
