Why no KDSS in the TRD PRO?

What I meant was buying those PRO items and putting them on a KDSS equipped Trail/TRDOR

Nah, I got that, you just forgot about the main 'TRD' parts in the equation, the suspension. You can't swing a dead cat around Colorado without hitting a TRD grill or black valences (not to mention the wheels).

 Oops oh yes the suspension. Somehow I've been overlooking that on this post! How much is that to buy from Toyota? Guess I was assuming most guys had upgraded their stock Trail suspension. I've seen several TRDP owners out here sell their Bilstein setup for full 3" lifts. I've never driven a PRO so I cannot attest to how that suspension feels/handles compared to its KDSS equipped & lifted brother.

This is an intriguing question. I really, really, really wanted a TRD Pro. At one point, i owned a 2010 FJ Trail Teams edition which was so cool....all the badging, nice touches, suspension, etc. I loved the trail teams which was essentially the TRD version for the FJ

But the more I researched, I became drawn to the TRD Off Road Premium. It has some really cool off-road features but also some really nice creature features. The black seats with the red TRD stitching and lettering on the head rests is really cool. Sun roof, KDSS, etc. Over time, I convinced myself that somehow the TRD Off Road Premium had more features than the pro and I could also score one with the exact options I wanted at invoice.

Now, i'd still like to have the TRD Pro. i'd like to have both.

I think it's about $1000 to buy all new Toyota parts to convert a Trail/TRDOR to a TRD Pro visually. If you want suspension upgrades - I would not buy the TRD Pro setup. There are a lot of options that are going to offer better performance for about the same $. Fox, SAW, King, ICON, - pick your color.

If you compare a TRD Pro at $43k to a Trail Premium at $38 - you've got $1k for the visual changes, and $4k to work with on suspension. $4k will get you a really solid suspension system from any of the big names. And you get KDSS too!

From where I sit - the only reason to buy a TRD Pro at current pricing is if you want one of the unique colors. Otherwise it's a lot of money for an appearance package and $800 shocks.

Exactly, I really wanted cement just due to its uniqueness.i saved about 8k and no wait getting my Trail. I love my Trail more than any Pro now.

I don't have anything against the TRD Pro. I just don't know why they exist. They're way too close to a TRDOR for the price jump. Every Trail/TRDor should just come with black accents and the aluminum skid plate. The suspension is meh - so I guess do whatever you want there. I'd toss it either way.

And then Toyota should do a legit TRD Off Road with a +1 long travel like the Colorado or Raptor - and take it seriously with 2.5" bypass, adjustable shocks. Add a front locker. Add a multi mode transfer case with an awd option. Maybe even put in a 4:1 transfer case. Put 4:10 or 4:30 diffs in it. And a roof rack that's not off the fisher price assembly line. And price it at $50k. And only offer it one color each year.

Trying to remember, because if I recall correctly TRD PRO's are not made at the factory per say like the other trims. Rather they select a model to "pimp" out with TRD PRO goodies and then sell it, I can't recall if this is done at the port or not.

I could be entirely wrong here, but that's how I remember someone explaining to me how they're made. It's been a while since I cared enough to look into it, but if that's true it might explain why no KDSS.

I agree, and that's how I understand it. However, not everyone likes to accept it.

That would be sweet.

I am in the process of this now, so far I've spent the following:
$726 for TRDP wheels
$898 for grill/garnish, valances
$255 for skid plate

Still need tires but terra grappler g2's in stock size are around $155 each

I'm going to probably purchase 5100's as I don't think I'd need the pro suspension and am only looking for a 1" max front lift. I don't have KDSS, but I do have a sunroof which was important to me. If I do all this plus the full oem audio plus system and HID's I'm still around the msrp of a pro.

I wasn't adding the wheels in my rough guess. I would probably skip the TRDP wheels personally. Although it's all basically just cosmetics, so get what you like. You should be able to sell at least the wheels for few hundred to make up some of the difference.

And that assumes you would have paid MSRP for both. My experience was that TRDP was MSRP+ and Trail was MSRP - 2500.

I really want to know how the Tacoma internal bypass fox coilovers ride. That is one TRDP option I might pony up the $ for if they're as good as an internal bypass shock should be. I hope Fox starts offering IBP for their aftermarket 2.5" coilovers.

Yep, for what it's worth I paid $4,430 below msrp, but mine had a lot of port installed options. I'm a fan of oem or oem+ looks and love everything about the pro, minus the lack of sunroof, so decided to just build it how I'd want it. I am looking into the fox setup as well, as my suspension upgrade will happen next year, big factor in my wheel choice as it shouldn't cause any rubbing issues.

Same for me. I wish the TRDP had KDSS, sunroof & JBL. Also what about the side blinking mirrors? That'd be nice as well for safety reasons since I have a 3-yr old. Trail Premium with KDSS for the win :yo:

Learned a lot reading this post. I traded my 2016 TRD ORP w/KDSS for the 2020 TRD ORP w/ no KDSS and bilstein package, no sunroof. I couldn’t be much more happier because I wanted 3” lift. I decided to lift my t4R yesterday. It took me and my cousin 6 hrs. Thanks for this post!

So this is pretty weird jetboy and mrblah, when first heard of kdss, always knew the off road capabilities of kdss was a byproduct of the at speed correction capabilities that kdss gave to the Toyota 4Runner.

When trapesing through this website learning everyone thought of kdss as an off-roading capability, even my sales lady said this is for off-roading!

Really don't think y'all can understand that kdss is an on-road driver improvement system that also has an off-road capability.

The Pro is intentionally designed to be an avid off-roaders dream. With the ability to be easily lifted and modded or used as an oem device, the 4RPro was designed to be the epitome of the off-roading SUV line at Toyota, an addition to an already popular line of SUVs.

No the 4Runner Pro did not need Xearas or kdss, but if you want the the best of both worlds go with KDSS on the off-road, If you dont want to lift more than 2.5 inches.

Good night everyone!

Guys I'm in a spot in my life where I'm able to pull the trigger on a 2023 4Runner and this post has been very help full !!

So I'm looking at a 23 TRD Pro or a TRD Off Road Premium and still back and forth between the two.... here is what I would like to set the truck up for:

1st My Roof Top Tent off my 80 Series
Touring with say 40 % off road and thinking 2" to 2.5" lift MAX no hard core rock crawling.
Rock Sliders
Rear Bumper 1st and then a Front down the road
Tires / Wheels I don't want to mess with modifying the body to clear tires so maybe 33" ?

My 80 Series has been great but getting long in the tooth so looking for a change and I have owned a 1st Gen and 2nd Gen over the years so no stranger to the 4Runner at all..

One of the things to ask yourself is if you like any of the things the Pro really gives you for the cost difference over an Offroad Premium. Until Toyota added the JBL stereo along with automatic headlights (which that drove my wife insane on our 2016), I didn't really see much reason to get a Pro versus getting an Offroad Premium and doing some modifications. In 2020 when army green was the special pro color (which we loved versus our vanilla black 2016), it was what pushed us over the edge to go ahead and upgrade.

The Fox suspension on the Pro is good, but you can probably do better for less effective money. The Pro wheels are also only 7" wide so technically they really are not supposed to take 285/70R17 tires (which is a common one for folks running 33s on these vehicles). Yes, plenty of people do this, but it is still technically not recommended.

A Pro gives you a reasonably nice upgraded 4Runner that can let you sit on the stock suspension and even the wheels and tires for awhile (albeit, the Nitto Terragrappler's are meh in the world of ATs now). If you want more customization along with the ability to get KDSS, Offroad Premium is a great way to go.

The Pro Bro is never worth it.

I disagree. In a purely financial sense, yes. But, if you want one of the special colors and the convenience of having a nicely setup vehicle off the dealer's lot with minimal upgrades needed to be quite offroad capable AND can get one at MSRP...

They also hold residual value as well if not better than most of the other 4Runner trims due to scarcity from what I've seen.

He did mention lifting. It's not any more capable than a Offroad except the shocks can handle a little more cycling but still minimal because they are tuned for a plush ride.

They all hold their value well, not just the Pro Bro.
