Why not 255/85/16?

Well I am resurrecting this old girl....had another question...
I am picking up new wheels before too long and they will be 8" wide. I am worried off road that the tire won't stick far enough past the wheel, especially the BFG's; not much of a rim protector.
I don't mind rock rash, but I'd rather not completely destroy a brand new set of wheels.

You should be fine man.
If you're running 255/85/16, and the rim is 8", you'll have about an inch of hang over on each side.
That might not sound like much, but when you air down, it'll give more.
That, and you're wheeling. If you don't want to scratch the rims, see if you can get some with faux bead locks or something. That way you can take off the piece and have clean rims.
Or just get some old steelies and add some rim stiffeners to them.

I'm going to have to disagree with the worthy Doc2012. I run 255/85r16 KM2s on the TRD 3 spoke 16x8 rims, and I chew them up something fierce in the rock gardens. I don't just have rash, I have gouges. If you go to an 8 inch wheel and 255s and give a crap about rash on your wheels (I don't

I ran th 255's before I went to 315's. Mine were the mud dawgs witch are maxis bighorns with a non brand name. Here is a video and a couple pics wheeling them on 8" wheels I ran 12-15psi whith no problems!

The only question that I have is how do they hold up when running low tire pressure on a trail (If this was mentioned else where i missed it)? Figured you would roll that skinny of a tire off the rim. Or have to run higher pressure. No?
I run my terragrapplers at 15/16 psi when at the trail.

Thanks Guys!!! So glad this thread came up. I need new tires this spring and was set on 285/75-16, but I think I'm going with these 255/85-16 now. I don't deal with deep mud. It's all mountain roads or highway. Only concern is sometimes running on the beach in sand... or maybe crossing a small pebble creek once in a while. They may want to dig down in the loose gravel. I don't know, maybe I'm just over thinking it. But not enough to stop me from buying these.

My junk isn't quite as heavy as a 3rd gen, but I run mine at 15psi all day.

I had 255 Bighorns before I went to 35s and I liked them a lot. They weren't great in the snow compared to Duratracs or even the MT/Rs I'm running now, but they were pretty typical for a mud tire. You'll probably like them.
255s require the same lift as 285s. Maybe a tiny bit less, but they are basically just another option for 33s with a standard 2.5-3" lift. No wheel spacers needed with the stock wheels and 255s, they are skinny.
I always ran my 255s on the trails at about 12-15 psi and I never popped a bead and I had them on my original 7" stock 3 spokes.

Awesome. That is some good mileage for those tires.

been looking toward a taller skinnier tire than my 265/75/16's, just to try something different. i have seen tall skinnies work, and work well.
one thing that troubles me is lack of 255/85/16 options now, maybe its time to look toward 17's to achieve a similar profile.
so far i'm seeing km2s, the old cooper st's (which im told are being phased out) and toyo open country's, and maybe toyo m55's, any other options?
the pics of 255/85/16's look awesome on 3rd gens, but how a tire looks is about my last consideration.
i actually laughed out loud at this.....

I run at 38 psi, this seems to work for me. Keep in mind I do carry a lot of weight. I strongly recommend toyo tires they perform well in snow and seems to last longer than most m/t.
