Why the roll down rear window?

I guess this is more of a philosophical question. anyhow, why would they have put it there? what was their thinking? I only roll mine down when Im stopped because of the horris exhaust that comes in and gets trapped when its down and im driving...

Ok I jut realized how stupid this looks comin from the guy with a bunch of bikes overflowing from his back window in his signature pic. I'm just curious why they did it when it obviously traps exhaust and stanks up the passenger area... Or is this only happens bing to me?

In my mind, it's part of what makes a 4runner. Toyota has done it on every single runner regardless of tailgate design. I have no cat and don't get any nasty exhaust smell. The only time I do is if I'm stopped and the wind is at my back, then I'll get a little bit of it. I go topless and doors off every chance I get.

I've had to carry quite a few things sticking out it, like a 32' (~17' collapsed) ladder, or 12' 2x4's, or my son's bike when I already had mine in (kids ones normally don't have quick releases). On a 2nd gen I've found that rolling down the back windows some helps prevent exhaust from getting up to the front.

All of that might be better on a roof rack, but with the 12' and 17' things I'd need spacing further than the maybe 3' that I have now.

It'd be a little strange to have the glass attached to the removable roof on a 1st gen. And with the glass tucked away safely in the tailgate, I've been able to move some things that were too big to fit inside, like a small kids play structure (only 3 houses down), or a wardrobe (3 miles).

I love my roll down window. Mine is down any chance I get. I also don't have any issues with exhaust smoke.

I have all the windows down and the sunroof open anytime I can (i.e. no dust storms).

Rolling the tailgate window down lessons the buffeting compared to just having the door windows down.

Ok on a more serious note, I have an aftermarket exhaust on mines and it dumps out the side under the rear quarter panel. Ive never had much issue witht he exhaust fumes even with my hardtop on. I just open up all the windows and sunroof and its fine.

For me it's mainly for hauling things that stick out the back. Wood, Pipe etc.

I just wish that they had not gone with a lift gate, but had a fold down tail gate and a lift window.

But the roll down back window is still a godsend when transporting long objects. Hope they don't ever get rid of that!

Rolling the tailgate window down lessons the buffeting compared to just having the door windows down.

opening the wing windows has the same effect. cuts way down on the turbulence inside the rig.

plus, the dog really likes to stick his snout out the back to smell where we've been.

The 4Runner was originally really a pick-up truck with the fiberglas camper shell, and rear seats added.

• That shell would not support hardware required for a lift-up window.
• A roll-up window could easily be installed (retrofitted) inside the tailgate,and left there even when top is removed.

Previous owner did the same to my truck:thumb3:, routed it out the side and i have little to no exhaust fumes. on the other hand, my buddy has stock exhaust on his gen 2 and the fumes are terrible with the back glass down.

I always roll with all the windows down, no AC :flame:

stock exhaust dumps out the side, behind the rear wheel on the driver's side.

I wish now that my back window worked. Its getting hotter now... don't know why it doesn't roll back up after it goes down...never really dug into it after I put limo tint over stock tint on the back window and jimmied the switch until it went back up all the way...whatever I guess

Do you have a rear windshield wiper?
The wiper must be put in it's correct spot when at rest or it will cut the power to the rear window. I deleted mine and then realized I had to have it connected in order to get my window to work. I'm thinking the ground is ran through the wiper.

Interesting...yes I do have a rear windshield wiper but it is up all the way but the guide for it is missing so I have to manually put it in the "resting position" when I am done using it
