Wierd Fan speeds for Heater Controls

Has anyone ever noticed that on occasion, the climate control fan speed suddenly increases? (and no the system is not set to Auto).

noticed this as well, i thought maybe it was because the car wasn't actually warm enough to pump air at the temp i had set and once it was, it blew out full force...?? Or is that just a stupid explanation??

Yep, mine will do that every once in awhile too.

It bugs the crap out of me too, the HVAC system is my biggest grip about the 4Runner.

It seems like I'm always having to fiddle with the controls. Some days, when it's cold out it decides that when I have it set to 65, I really meant 90. So it blows out air so hot, it puts you to sleep.

But then later on it decides that 65 should really be about 50. So I'm always adjusting those controls trying to get it just right.

Then other days, I'll be driving, and can't seem to keep the windshield from fogging up. So I have to have it on defrost the entire day.

Yep, no clue. I also don't like how on Auto it puts the A/C on, or how it has to be in it's desired setting, otherwise if i change it, the auto goes off.

Yep, I don't like that the A/C comes on when hitting auto too. Makes no sense when I get in and it's 50

mine does the same. it was most noticeable the other night, it was 40 degrees out and the runner was hot. with auto turned off, I lowered the temp and crazy enough the fan speed went from high to med to low.

I find that if you are never really out of "auto" mode. when auto is illuminated, it controls the fan speed and which vents are working (face, feet, etc). when you turn auto off, all it turns off is the trucks ability to adjust which vents are active.

why cant car manufactures figure out that some people like to manually control fan speed temp, and which vents are active.

Well either its a massive design defect OR someone at Toyota as having some fun screwing with the climate control programming. HAHA

There is no defect; you just need some time with the system.

The fan speed is determined by the temp setting. When the system needs to reach the set temp it will increase the fan speed until it reaches it, then the system will decrease the fan speed and lower temp to maintain the set temp. If you override the system by selecting where the air is directed (the auto light will go off) it will still adjust the fan speed and temp. To maintain a set fan speed you need to manually select the fan speed you want. Any time you manually override the system the auto light will go out but there still can be controls that will work automatically, depending on which change you select.

The auto and the A/C light can be on without the A/C compressor engaged. This will allow the compressor to engage/disengage when it is needed. Only when you hit the button (light off) for the A/C will the compressor not engage (except for defrost mode).

After a while you will find that the system works very well. I found that finding a comfortable temp. setting and leaving the system set on auto will give a system that requires very little attention. Once in a while I change the inside/outside air setting and also weather the compressor is engaged. The compressor will engage sometimes in the winter when the system is trying to remove humidity.

I agree with Koz , you just need to get used to the system. Mine does the same thing , but works fine . Just the way it works.

I have been doing a lot of troubleshooting, since my heater is shot. It either doesnt work, or works full blast. From the toyota tech manuals that I found, the fan will sound louder depending on where its pointing. Furthermore, the AC is necessary, even in sub zero temps, as it takes out moisture from the cabin. lastly, if you have the control set to blow on your legs, and the outside temp drops to certain temp, even though its not on auto, the controls can switch to window/leg option.

The ECU for the AC/Heater has all kids of weird programming in it.

Oh - and when its like mine, on full blast - it means there is a serious error and its doing full blast for safety issues. Needless to say my 4runner is going to the shop today.

Well I wish if the auto was turned off, it was truly a manual system.

If I have it set to 67, I want a temp of 67 coming out the vents, and if I have the fan set to med, I want it set to med and stay there.

I'm tired of driving along on a cold day, and having it set to 65, and being cooked out the truck!
Then 20 minutes later, I have to turn it up to 75 because it's blowing out cold air again.

Then going back and forth the entire drive.

Then having the fan go from med to high all on it's own.

The whole time it's set to manual.

Talk about not keeping your eyes on the road, I'm always having to look down and try to adjust it. A person should not have to do all this, just to keep a comfortable temperature inside.

Another thing I don't like is having to turn the fan on to adjust the temp for the vent.

It's been cold in the mornings, and I turn the fan on with temp set to 77 until I get warmed up then turn it off. Just fine for th drive to work. In the afternoon when I go out I just use the vent with no fan and with the sun the interior gets warm with the vent blowing hot air, and the only way to change the vent temp to cool it down is to turn on the fan, and adjust the temp.

Remember the old days when you had a temp slider Red to blue?

X2

I vote for design defect - I dont need to spend any more time with the system to figure it out. turning off auto doesnt make it manual - only semi-automatic.

I do agree though that the system is easy to use, but when it is -5 degrees out, I want that fan on FULL BLAST - but the truck feels like making it blow 70%. then you have to play with the temp (lower) until the fan starts picking up speed. the semi automaitc control doesnt allow enough control in severely cold conditions.

I haven't had my 4runner as long as some of you guys have, but i haven't had any problems with the system. No weird fan speeds, i have it at 65 and it feels like 65. I have had it in cold weather as well has hot weather.

cdoyle,

Your system sounds like it's shot man. Time to visit the stealer if I were you. Hopefully you're still under warranty.

I hardly touch my controls, only when I need defrosting to the windshield.

It's done it since the day I bought it, and others have complained about the same types of things.

The problem is, when it's super cold out the truck tries to heat up the truck as fast as possible, so it blow out super hot heat, but then it get to the temp, and then blows out cooler air to try and keep it at temp.

Problem is, it's not constant it just goes up and down the entire time. It's annoying.

To maintain a set fan speed, just manually select the speed you want and it will not change, but the temp will change to maintain the set temp. Remember you can also manually select inside/outside air. You can not control the vent temp, only the cabin temp. You could play with the temp setting and fan speed to regulate vent temp and the vent temp would still vary a little. If you think about it; if you have a constant vent temp the system (like the old systems), you would have to adjust the temp as the interior heats up until the vent temp maintains a comfortable cabin temp. This is what the system does automatically.

This issue comes up with new owner until they have had time to use the system more. Again, the system works best when you find a comfy temp and set it on auto. It really does work great.
