Wife filled gas tank with Diesel fuel

I'm looking for some advice on removing the diesel fuel from the tank and fuel lines on my 14 T4R. I'm currently waiting for the tow truck to arrive and ill have it dropped off at my house so I can work on this in the garage. She filled just under half a tank with diesel. Anyone have any tips with this year of gas tank? Is there a drain plug I can access like other models? Figure I can get away without dropping the tank from the vehicle?

Good luck, my friend did this post new year in Madrid. Lucky Spanish hospitality set in and the tow truck people tools ia to the family shop to help. Be glad you don't have I tear out the inertior to flush the tank like we did in my buddy's 318. You've got a 6 hour project on your hands my friend.

I would pull the tank, drain it and rinse it out then trade in the 4Runner and wife for new ones.

Or maybe easier to swap the engine for diesel one (Toyota Prado Turbo Diesel for example) :tape2:

Do it right.
Drop the tank and drain the 12 or so gallons of crap. Clean and swab filler neck too.
If "she" did not try to start it then that's all you have to do.
If "she" did try to start it you will have to clean out the fuel system.

It's OK, it can be done relatively easily but it will smoke and probably throw a code or 100. Good luck.

Will a diesel nozzle even fit into the T4R? Just curious how she got diesel into the truck.

I would just drain the tank and run some gas through it. I've run small engines on diesel by mistake. No issues, just a lot of smoke. A small amount probably won't harm anything. It probably wont run until you cycle enough gasoline through to get into the cylinders. Diesel isn't volatile enough to burn well. I personally probably wouldn't even drop the tank. I'd just drain it as best I could - like maybe a pump dropped down the gas fill hole. Then fill with gasoline. Open the fuel rail (there's a schrader valve that you can just pull the valve stem IIRC - hook up a hose and run the fuel pump to push fuel though until it flushes through with gasoline. Then run it. It'll smoke for a bit I'm sure before the remaining diesel is purged from the fuel rail to injector hoses.

Here in the US, I don't think the nozzle fits?? OP is in Canada however.

I didn't see that you said one way or the other, but she caught it before she started it? No drain on the tank or anything like that I saw. Just looked at the FSM for removal of the fuel tank and it disconnects the fuel supply, starts the engine until it shuts off. And it actually uses Techstream after that to run the fuel pump manually without starting the car to drain the tank.

I would definitely try to do it right, i.e. removal of all possible diesel and flushing the tank and affected areas with fresh gasoline. Message me and I can probably get you some documents that could help.

If it was started you may also consider replacing spark plugs and the fuel filter as well.

That sucks that "your wife" did this. When I was a kid "my wife" filled my BOTH of my father's diesel tanks with gas. That was a fun project for "her" when "she" was 16. Luckily he didn't make "her" pay for the tow bill.

She likely made it fit or the tanker buggered up the delivery (can happen but not likely in this case).

lol - I knew it sounded like "the wife" story but I'm not whistling Dixie over here, true story. I would have realized it when the nozzle barley fit the filler neck. Also, there is a bit of excess spillage indicating the challenge of filling.

The truck ran until it died. So the fuel rail needs to be bled, filter & spark plug change wouldn't hurt either.

Thanks for the advice, everyone! If I could get a copy (TSRM) of the fuel system, it would be appreciated. Since techstream is used to activate the fuel pump, any chance of just using a jumper at the relay to run the pump & purge the fuel system from the valve stem (Schrader valve) like this video? If I can access the valve stem to make this work? I think Jetboy is right by just removing as much in the tank and rail as I can & that lead me to the below video. Can anyone Id the T4R location of the fuel rail valve stem in the meantime?

I think there's a drain in the fuel tank a drain plug . empty it put some fuel in it and flush it through using the key on off to set fuel pump . open up the fuel rails and let it purge out it might smoke but probably run clean quick

Years ago I lived on a farm in Ohio. Thieves would go up and down the back roads begging for gas. Being good old boy farmers they would help out with a couple gallons. The farmers eventually realized the same people would come back and beg for more gas and found other farmers doing the same. Turns out the people were not poor just looking for free gas.The farmers caught on to this. The farmers banded together and would then say yes we will give you gas but actually gave them diesel fuel. This was before the fuel injection days.
You could always tell the beggars coming because there car was smoking from the diesel. I sure at some gas/diesel ratio it will not run.

I doubt there is a drain plug on the fuel tank, there was not on the Jeep Wrangler I had to drain the fuel from. I siphoned the gas out through the filler. I tried running the fuel pump with the line disconnected but the pump would not run. Turns out there is a safety devise the cuts the pump off after 5 seconds if it does not build up pressure. This is a safety devise in case a fuel line is cut in an accident. I do not know if the 4runner has the same set up but I imagine it would. I searched my 4runner a while back for a Schrader valve near the engine but did not find one. I just wanted to see if one was there to see if I could use my fuel injector cleaning kit that connect there some where down the road. I would think that if you drained most of the tank and could get most of the diesel out of the fuel lines it would be fine.
