Will an Aftermarket Muffler void Emmissions Warranty (Sulfur TSB)?

All,
Let me start by saying that I truly tried to search for this answer (I'm a stickler for searching before posting, and I have only started a few threads so far...)

With that out of the way, I have an '06 with the v8 that I bought almost 3 months ago. I smelled the sulfur right away and still smell it after hills/etc, but I know that the rig's only got 35k on it and about 4 more years of emmissions warranty left (orginally bought in Feb, '07). So I've been lazy and haven't made an appointment to get it looked at yet.

With that said, I've got an itch to install a Magnaflow muffler (part 12586 - 5x11x22). I ordered it last night and it should be here from Summit Racing (free shipping btw) by Friday as it is going ground from Ohio. I'm reallllly looking forward to getting this Maggie installed as soon as possible and want to make an appointment with a local shop and get it done.

My concern is if there is any chance what-so-ever that they'll void the warranty and/or say the sulfur is due to the aftermarket muffler, maybe I should bite the bullet and get the Cat's looked at first? Or will there be no issues as everyone knows, the muffler only "muffles".

What say you?


And as a side-bar, any opinions on the 22" Magnaflow? (I know there are other threads out discussing this, but I thought I'd just throw it out there).

Yes, the muffler is only a noise suppressor. However, they may try to pull a fast one on you an say it voids the warranty unless they install it. Ask them first before doing it and see what they say. You can always question them on whether a TRD cat-back exhaust voids the emission warranty.

If the dealer requires that they mount it they have to do it without cost or it will violate monopoly and anti_trust laws.

As long as it can be easily put back to stock then you don't have to worry about voiding the warranty. At least that is what Toyota told me when I bought my CPO '06 last Feb.

The warranty issue will come in if they prove that your alteration caused the failure.

Based upon the feedback you've given me, I think my best course of action is to kill 2 birds with one stone and set up and appointment for the dealer to both look at my Cat's and install my muffler at the same time.

This way, the dealer will be installing so I'll have no issues there, and I am saved the hassle of setting up another appointment with a local shop to have the muffler installed (with the higher dealer install costs in my opinion).

Thanks for the input! I'll post back on how it all goes and how the muffler sounds.

Hope it's not the Catalytic! I believe they are over $2000. When the Vehicle/Cat's are cold they won't remove the harmful gases as well. Is that when you get the strong smell compared to when the vehicle is up to operating temp?

I actually get it hot and cold equally I'd say. There's a tsb for it though that I hope they'll apply.

I think you'll like it whether it's V6 or V8. I have one on my 1.6L MR2 and if it can make a 1.6L sound good it should do great for a larger displacement engine. It's quiet when you're cruising, but sounds great all the way up to 8500 RPM on that car... and it's hard not to sound like rice up that high!

Alright... so on the topic of this muffler and the dealer.... Last week, my dealership had an appointment available, but I was not available because of work. Now I just called this week and they're booked all week. Next week, I'll be traveling for business literally all week, so the T4R will be parked at the airport the whole time...

So, now here I am the day after the 4th, I'm off work and could get this muffler installed by like Pep Boys or the like, but I've gotta wait like 2 more weeks just to get my cats looked at.... EFFFFF!!!!!!!!

I am itching to install this thing so bad...

Along the same lines...I did the tailpipe mod last year where they cut the resonator off and divert the tailpipe out to the side. Would that void my extended warranty? Even with the tailpipe out to the side, I'm still getting the sulfer smell from time to time....

Darn good question. I called the dealer back and asked their advice on the whole situation. He was honest and said that he'd like to be able to tell me to go ahead and get the muffler, but he said to be on the safe side, I should wait until they see it. He's not worried about their end, but worried about the submissions to corporate for coverage of course. He did lean towards sounding like it wouldn't matter, but since it's not done yet, I might as well be patient.

For the record, I had just gotten off the phone with Rohrich Toyota, in Pittsburgh (called them after my last post... lol). They were truly so helpful and apologetic that they couldn't get me in for an appointment this week. I'm pretty much going to need to wait until the week of the 18th to get it looked at now, but he said he'll be able to hook me up and advised a good muffler shop that can do the work on the cheap after they look at the cats.

Thanks again for the advice on this thread. I'm now realizing I just need to be patient. In another 2 weeks from now, I'll hopefully have my muffler on! (Now I just need to stress over if I made the right decision by choosing the 22" Magnaflow over the 18"... Like I said, I don't want it too loud, but definitely more than stock, especially want it "deeper" than stock.)

Welp, she's at the dealer to get the CATs looked at tomorrow. After they confirm 'yay' or 'nay' on the sulfer tsb, they told me they'd actually run it up to a muffler shop up the road for the muffler install for me. Thought that was really cool of them.

Ill report back tomorrow on the verdict and how the 22'' maggy sounds!

Getting free new CATs! Does that mean they replace manifolds all the way down to the ''Y'' - right? And 2 CATs? Problem is, they don't have in stock and will get them in by Monday and I'm going camping next week, so now I need to wait 2 more weeks! He said he wouldn't have the muffler installed until the tsb is done... Its good news on the tsb, but so sad I gotta wait for that and the muffler... :-(

Well guys, just an update that the dealer expedited the order for the CATs! They got them in yesterday and got them installed the same day!

Today was the Manaflow muffler install day. IT'S FINALLY ALL DONE! I only had the muffler swapped. I did not dump the tailpipe out the side or remove the resonator or anything.

Honestly, I 100% could not be happier! It's like the perfect little rumble that I was hoping for so much! You can definitely tell it's not stock and is just nice and deep. Not the least bit over-bearing! It's EXACTLY what I was looking for!

Now I know it might break in a little more over the next couple thousand miles or so. I'll try to remember to report back and maybe take a vid or two and post it up here and on the v8 exhaust sound clip compilation thread for everyone's convenience.

As for the sulfur - it seems completely gone for now! (There was just a little of the CAT break-in smell when I rolled down the rear window. Almost like a burning plastic type smell). I did not pick up any sulfur what-so-ever. I'll try to report back on if this changes when I do with the muffler comments. I think this was like a $2,000 job, for FREE under warranty!

Just know that anyone looking for a little bit of a deep rumble and wants something that can still be a nice comfy highway cruiser/everyday driver, this Magnaflow seems perfect with my first drive at least!

In my opinion, just a little better rumble than stock. Just what I was looking for. Sadly, the video doesn't do justice to the sound... It's a little deeper/louder in person. I used a little LG android phone, so not the best quality (at all). Also, sorry about the ridiculous upside-down video and all that.

Also, FYI that I've only had it installed for about a week. It starts out quieter and will get louder the longer its driven on any one particular day. (Especially after a highway drive, it's louder). This video was taken after picking up some fast food, so it was running for about 10 minutes.

Hopefully it will get to the point that it's just consistently one volume at startup after completely broken in? I know these use a sort of baffling material, so we'll see.

I did the side tailpipe mod a little while ago and then recently got the sulfer TSB done. I even told the dealer that I didn't want them messing with the side exhaust work and the SS tip. They said, yes sir!

I emailed Toyota directly because I was having problems with the dealer in my area. I asked them about the sulfur smell and they replied back, a sulfur smell is an indication of a high sulfur content in the gas. Did I miss something? Typically, sulfur smells come from over fueling and dumping fuel right onto the cats. Not sure how I am going to get this done considering I have some issues with my local dealer. Thoughts?

That's good to know! I think I'll print out the TSB and hand it to the dealership when I'm in there in a week or so for my 50k maintenance.

The last time I showed up with a TSB in hand, they were all ready to dismiss me until I whipped it out...uhh, the TSB, that is. That seemed to get their attention...
