Will you keep your 4runner if gas hits $8 a gallon?

With my 4R, 18000 miles a year at 18 mpg so 1000 gallons per year. At $3/gal it costs $3000. At $8/gal it would cost $8000. About $100 more a week so I can’t see giving up driving for that. When I had a Suburban and drove a lot more at $3.50gal, my gas bill was about $700/month. It’s part of the cost of living so you pay what you have to. Now I have a Land Cruiser and running premium so my math already looks different but I still enjoy driving.

The psychological part being the games that are played with artificial scarcity. How long did gas prices stay elevated after Katrina? That’s when they first hit $3.00 for us and 2009 they were up even farther, not down, at $4.20 a gallon in the southeast.

Your 2uz doesn't require premium and you're just making it run worse (unless they changed something between 01 and 04). Run the lowest octane without pinging and if it doesn't recommend premium, it's a waste.
Our 2011 does require premium.... and to add to the thread.... we are considering trading/selling it in part due to it's mileage.
We've done the hybrid thing. Meh (owned both a Prius C and a Prius V).
I would get another T4R. Our 97 gets around 20 and happy about that.

Yeah, I learned that once I downloaded the owners manual. Seems like a lot of 100 owners on IH8MUD run premium and that was what I was going by. It runs great with both though I'm now running the cheap stuff.:thumb:

No way I'd give it up. The 4Runner is my gateway to the great outdoors, so associated costs are easy to justify.
If I couldn't get out and camp and wheel as much in this great state of CO, I'd be spending that money on a shrink anyway.
I don't commute to work any more, so I drive a lot less than I used to. Even if I had to commute to the office again and gas was $8 I'd be looking to see if math makes a case for leasing a cheap commuter or buying a used beater.

I suppose I could drive my Kubota to work since it will run on biodiesel, but it would take forever to get there. Gas is still cheaper than gas station bottled water, which is ironic.

It really is getting quite scary. The cost of new vehicles is skyrocketing. I'm sure the new Tundra will carry a $10k price increase over the old one. That puts a TRD Pro or Platinum in the $65K range. When the new 4Runner supposedly comes out in 2023, I would imagine that a TRD Pro will go for $65-$70k. Price out any brand full size truck decently spec'd and it's north of $60K. Combine that with the skyrocketing price of fuel and insurance rates and I'm surprised anyone is still able to afford these vehicles. I know the trend is towards electric vehicles, but what do you think is going to happen to the cost of electricity when everyone needs to plug their vehicles in every night and the demand for electricity skyrockets? It won't be any cheaper to charge your electric vehicle than it was to fill up at the pump. California already has regular rolling blackouts in the summer and Texas recently began limiting electricity usage during certain parts of the day. Windmills and solar isn't gonna cut it. We've got plenty of cheap oil but it's going to be staying in the ground. We may end up going the way of Europe and all be driving around in Smart cars.
