window tinting

I have been thinking about tinting my front windows to match the rest of my truck. I like doing things my self so I considered buying a precut tint kit online and doing it my self. has anyone done this before? I really don't want to pay 60 a window at the local store. Also if you do have your windows tinted in the front did they or you remove the door panels or did they just put the tint on with the windows up? any pics? (I think the factory window are tinted to 20% on 4Runner is this true? ) If you did buy online who did you get your kit from?

20% will match best.

I don't think $60 is too bad considering they will do it much faster and will provide a warrenty.

You don't have to remove the whole window. You will need a few tools though.

I've tinted several car windows myself using the precut kits. I think they're great but I also love to try things myself instead of paying someone else. I figure I can screw it up as well as they can, so why pay? The front windows are probably some of the easiest because they are flat and not too big or too small. I would recommend removing the door panel and definitely remove the inside moulding around the window. Make sure you clean the window well and buy the tint application kit at walmart. The precuts are pretty much all the same so I would just look at shipping costs. I know I used Elite Tint on Ebay, but I can't remember the other seller I used. Like Clemsonfan said, 20% should match the back windows. Prep takes the longest time and actual application is really fast and pretty easy. The sellers on Ebay include good application instructions too

DO IT

4runners are EASY to tint.
I tint all of the time.....
spare time that is...

Like 004gunner said, you can take the panels off to make it ez but it is not needed.

I get all of my tint from www.northerntint.com

they use HIGH QUALITY tint. It is like $50 for the whole TRUCK pre-cut kit.

All pre-cut kits are NOT the same. I only use good grade NON-Metalized film (Suntek, LLUMAR, 3M). If I am not mistaking, Northen uses either 3M or Suntek. Not Solargard or trim-bright (they turn purple over time)
And at 20% they are a perfect match.

NOW the only thing with pre-cut kits, they leave no room for error. That is it.

You need only a few tools and PLENTY of h20 (distilled H20 from wally world $.49) and get the solution or some ivory soap to make a whole gallon.

All left:
1 or 2 spray bottles with your solution mix in it

1 razor blade just in case of trimming

Chizler hardcard
squeegy $1.00 or so at wally world
conquer

i get my tools from here too:

SURE! I can post pix of my trucks...
the back window I went with 20% on top and now they are blacked out which is perfectly legal.

Check this out:

ALWAYS CLEAN THE WINDOWS PERFECTLY!

I put 20% on top of my factory tint too. I actually could have gone a little darker on just the rear hatch window but otherwise it is great. If you read the precut kit's descriptions on Ebay you will see most guarantee the tint to never fade. I don't even know where to find that stuff that fades to purple as the industry caught on quickly and corrected that problem.

Factory tint removal prior to install

So removing the factory tint would require a razor blade and some solvent?
whats the best way to handle that?

i see

now that i read all the replies thanks i see. (started drinking at 2pm today) not driving of course.
I think im going to go with 30%. If its not legal thats ok Im in southern Cali and the cops are generally after the import racers and not so much us runners.

Ill like the privacy but also parking security when i have cargo in the back

I personally tried to tint my back ones with a cheap kit and it was one of the hardest things I have ever attempted. Everything goes wrong.

I got 25% on my fronts professionally done. $125. Pretty close to a match but not perfect.

actually

So you're in NC too, ambush. What level of tint do you have on your runner? Legal must be at least 35% according to tintlaws.com

Im back in Columbia SC for the moment.
Thank goodness because I hate inspections!!

Im at 20% on front and 5% in back..
I just put 20% on top of the factory.

I started with 20% up front. That was fine for a while. Then I went and got a 5% brow and got 45% windsheild about a week or two later. That really helps at night. After a month or two that didn't seem dark enough so I put 15% on all of the rear. That's where I stand currently and I'm liking it. I'm probably going in this week to get 5% on the fronts to match the rears, it's not super noticable though.

5% you are playing with death!!
I saw a chick get a $400 ticket for 2% in Columbia.
She was like she was going to Florida to visit her moms for a couple of months.
The cop told her if she had Florida plates it would have been ok.
HA!

Be careful!!
