Windsheild cracked, pics of swap out

Well we hit 7k on it and already had to change the windshield. A rock hit it from the highway causing a chip while my wife was going to work.

When my wife got out of work to head home, the chip turned into about 8"to10" crack. I pretty sure it's was due to the cold weather here in MA and the heat being on.

Anyway here are some pics of the windshield swap.

Does that replacement glass have the hydrophobic coating?

HYDROPHOBIC

HYDROPHOBIC: A hydrophobic molecule is repelled by water; literally, hydrophobe means something with a fear of water. Hydrophobic molecules often cluster together when dropped in water, just as oil does. Hydrophobic molecules are also called lipophilic because they will dissolve in oils and other lipids. They tend to be electrically neutral and nonpolar and work better with neutral and nonpolar solvents.

In a hydrophobic interaction, although it seems that the hydrophobic molecules are rejecting water, what's actually happening is that water is rejecting the hydrophobic molecules in favour of bonding to itself. Water bonds easily with polar molecules, and since water itself is polar, it will prefer water molecules (polar) to oil molecules (nonpolar). Hydrophobic molecules then tend to cluster together, though they're not attracted to each other, because according to thermodynamics, large numbers of like molecules are energetically more favourable than smaller numbers.

Hydrophobic molecules include alkanes, oils, fats, and other greasy substances. Hydrophobic solvents are used to clean up oil slicks and manage oil spills and in dry-cleaning.

I got a huge crack in my winshield last month, its about 20" long. I'm leaving it. Battle scar.

Bob_VT- I have no clue if it has hydrophobic coating. Should it?

Even Steven - No I didn't replace it myself, it was covered by insurance. They had an auto glass company come to my house to do it.

After watching the guy, I could have done it myself. It took him about 40 minutes to install it. Very cut and dry installation.

Is the Hydrophobic coating really that important ? I would rather have a thicker windshild that does not chip so easy.

Is that PPG you put in thicker ?

Funny you should ask that.

I am going thru the process now of replacing my glass due to a VERY TINY chip that turned into a crack across the entire windshield.

I have talked to 3 different Service Mgrs at 3 local dealers, and none of them had a clue what I was talking about.

All they would tell me is that the parts dept. would take my VIN and order the glass from that.

I swear, I wish dealerships would learn about their own products.

My '03 has hydrophobic glass in the two front side windows and the the rear hatch. Do the newer models have hydrophobic glass in the windshield as well?
