Windshield rattling sound/highway speeds

Just picked up my 2014 4Runner SR5 Premium not long ago and I noticed that something is rattling at highway speeds. It is definitely coming from the direction of the windshield. It almost sounds like the wipers are making the sound, but that would be odd wouldn't it.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I get that every so often, usually when its cold. Its not the windshield or the dash. It soulds like little pebbles hitting the glass correct? The only thing I can come up with is the cold weather allows something to demensionally change enough to allow a flutter or a rapid tapping. It is intermittent and even though conditions will repeat the noise does not. Now there is another noise some posters have heard and it is quite different and always happens. It was attributed to the inner fender liner on the right side if I remember correctly

Yes it's definitely getting cold. Like I was saying it almost sounds like the wipers are rattling (like the sound you hear when you go through an automatic car wash and it dries your vehicle) , but they are not. I really cannot make out what it is. I have always heard this sound when I drive on the highway. It is not intermittent.
 
I've had the same issue on both my 2012 & 2014. To me is sounds like a loose wire rattling around right above my rear view mirror. I thought about taking the headliner apart to have a look but I'm afraid I'll make a new problem.
 
Sealant/gasket around windshield perhaps? Happened in my Superduty when it got cold and sound like an amplified kazoo.... terrible.

Sounds more like something's fluttering in the wind though. Do you have a sunroof? Could it be coming from there at all, maybe in the tracks?

Hope you find it. I went through hell finding my windshield noise (dealer no help as it was only when very cold and driving into the wind), I'd like to think Toyota uses better sealants and gaskets though and there's just some debris caught somewhere.

If it's that repeatable, take it to the dealer. And absolutely insist that you either drive or ride along on the test drive.

A noise like that would make me crazy.
 
I had an odd rattling/clicking noise like that once. After a few days, I discovered I had not seated my sunvisor back in it's retainer. Doh!
 
I have a sunroof, but I know it's 100% coming from the windshield. It's gotta be something coming from the inside that we can't see.

What did they find with yours?
 
i had a similar noise and it turned out to be the rubbery flap in the driver side front wheel well that i guess blocks debris from getting into the engine bay.. mine had some slack left in it and it was flapping at highway speeds.. i poked another hole into the rubber piece in such way that it would get rid of any slack and the noise has been gone since

The noise sounds like it's right in front of me somewhere.

Sounds like I will be taking it to the dealer.

YEA that's what it sounded like... don't waste your time at the dealer when you can at least go under there and look at what i'm talking about. i had to do it on BOTH of my 5th gen 4runners

On the rear view mirror check to see if the little black plastic cover at the base is secure. Mine made a super annoying noise that took a long time to find. Your issue seems to match what I experienced.

Also, check the plastic retainer pins on the rubber flap thing in the front fenders. Those made a real annoying noise at about 35-40 in my truck after doing the lift. Took a long time to figure that out too...

Mine looks ok.

I did and that all looks ok.
