I'd throw stupid money at my 3rd gen, make it unstoppable, and travel the world in it for however long I feel. Similar to this guy.

Then I'd invest the rest in a safe manner and do as I please for the rest of my life. No need for a huge house on top of the mountain just to show everyone that I have more money than them. And buy a bunch of cars that I'd like to own one day.

Sell or give away everything that is replaceable. Store what little is left.
Travel until my son is ready for pre-school - bringing my mom and a nanny along as much as possible.
Then buy a normal sized house in a great ski town and build a huge woodshop. Send son to best private school in the area.
Travel when he's not in school. Build furniture and snowboard when school is in session.
Mostly just focus on the kid and great experiences.
Hell, with that kind of money, maybe have another kid.

I laughed out loud at that. I can tell you as someone with 10 siblings and I have adopted my own....It makes me wonder how much you think kids cost? haha

Build multiple normal houses for the parents and siblings (far enough apart where we don't have to see each other if we don't want)
Run it on well water, natural gas and solar if possible
Zombie compound (that requires an entire thread of its own)

Run for office
In that order

That Gunther had some cool adventures with Otto and Christine! That is just amazing.
Well, I don't need a huge house either. I wouldn't want to contribute to the growing trend of buying up access to something beautiful and wall it up just for myself. I would take care of all my family and provide and environment where we could spend and even more valuable asset, time. The money would allow you to not have to work to exist and this would leave time to pursue life without all the banality.
I would get some seat covers and a better stereo... Oh, and a supercharger. I would track down my old 1994 Toyota extended cab and buy it back. I might make a cool home out of shipping containers. Focus on rock and roll without starving. It would give me plenty of time to woodshed on my drums. I would travel and see plenty of cool concerts for sure.
I would just make the rest up as I went along.
Private school costs between 17k and 21k per year here. So, 12 years of that.. yeah.
The same article you posted says that higher income families spend close to 400k and the actual study acknowledges that education costs were under-reported and that private school would increase the annual cost of raising a child.
So yeah. I'd say 400k.

But for real world...
My kid turns 1 on Saturday - the pre-school he'll start in a few months costs $291 week - roughly $15k per year. I have a friend in CHI that spends twice that.
I will be very happy when my boy can start public pre-K for free.

Congrats on the little one have a 7 month old in daycare so i know what you mean.
All I'm saying is either way I will make it work..and also pay off probably my parents mortgage as well while I'm at it.

Sell it, then buy a Land Cruiser. Long travel it. Overland it. Then live it in and burn money for warmth on cold nights.
