Wiring Lights On the Gobi

A few questions regarding wiring the lights.
I know Okki has write up about this in his build thread and also I stumbled upon this thread while searching: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/95698-help-roof-light-wiring.html which seems to give some good info.

I WAS planning on just running the wires in some loom along the lower rail of the rack to my various light mounting points. BUT it seems that some of you are actually drilling into the rack and running the wires inside the lower rack rail all the way to the front. Is that correct?

Any tips for this?
What kind of grommets are you using after the hole is drilled?
There are some rubber grommets in the lower rail of my rack already, are these for running wires?

I just wanted to get some more info on this because I DO NOT want to drill into a rack that took 4 months to get here without knowing what I'm doing.

My Gobi came prewired with a black and a white wire on BOTH sides of the rack. The enter/exit at the corners. I used the driver side to feed power and (2 lights per wire) and the passenger side to ground.

Yea, I've just been searching through here and it seems that all the racks come pre-wired, but I just went down to check again and there are definitely no wires sticking out anywhere...

Maybe with the amount of lights on this rack they didn't want to mess with it at all?

I do have several of these rubber grommets placed in holes and spaced throughout the rack. Did they put these in place for me but just left the actual wiring up to me?

Yup, I have wires coming out of the grommets on both sides. Mine's a standard rack.

Ok, so they put the grommets in. But just left out the wires.

Don't forget that you will need switches. Do you have switches? Switches will be needed to turn the lights off and on. Switches man, Switches! :hungry:

You may want to give Sandra @ Gobi a call about that. You can obviously wire it yourself, but it looks like they had a slip up in the QA department.

Thanks everyone. I got the rack wired up, lights and rotopax on, and will be lifting into place tomorrow I think.

The wires were not run because the side light mounts cut the bottom bar into two sections, so you can not run a length of wire from front to back without exiting the rack.

I made my rack,looks just like the gobi in ways. but i wired my lights through the bottom tubing. i used these little round grommets from local hardware store.

Sr5SuShi was that you that I ran into in Camden last week? I was talking to you about your rack and the delay I've had with Gobi. That would be a really weird coincidence...I was in Maine for vacation with my family. It was last Monday night I think and you had your runner parked on the street.

hahaha yes, that was me! what a coincidence... funny how things all work out. it was nice to meet you.:hello: i know a lot of people who have to wait when ordering with gobi. My Rear ladder took almost 2 months. but its well well worth it. if your ever back in camden let me know.

Haha wow thats crazy. You too! :hello: I will definitely let you know if I'm up in the area with my runner. I'd be interested in the Maine trails. And yea it took about 4 months for my rack to come in, when I opened the box I was just lucky everything (ladder, and hi-lift mount) were in the box with the rack!
