arb has same issue by the looks of it. Youd have to be a pretty big v to not be able to bend the metal. Not sure why I didnt think about it before I bought the front runner. I'll use use a cable lock I suppose.

I usually carry my 5 gal tank with me on long trips or camping for a few days. Just extra peace of mind that you'll make it to the gas station when your past empty.
Although I did have a friend who died due to a gas can exploding in his jeep when he crashed. I think about it every time I load my rig up.

My point exactly. Short of shipping our trucks overseas to a proper 3rd world country, I can't think of many places within NA that you're more than 150 miles from the nearest the gas station. I guess I'm just paranoid carrying such a hazardous, flammable liquid in such a haphazard fashion. Now diesel on the other hand ... :naughty:

I can go through a full tank on a multi-day trip in the middle of nowhere here in Utah. Driving two hours to and from a station is kind of a pain. Also, my S/C'd 4Runner is fairly thirsty, so I carry one jerry can for peace of mind. Sometimes two if it's a longer trip.
Additionally, if I'm using the telescope which uses the battery I'll let it idle for a few hours while I'm capturing images.

At 10mpg on a trail it doesnt take long. Plus getting there miles. Plenty of places to run out of gas. DOT approved cans in a holder is haphazard... yea.

Last April we were ghost town hunting down in southern Utah west of Milford, did a 300 mile loop on dirt with nary a gas station to be seen. We could have run into town for gas, but that would have taken more time (and more gas, ironically).

Yes it is the top tether anchor point for child seats. They were only in the '01 and '02 3rd gens.

Generally, I drive around with a flaming log on the roof of my 4Runner at all times, it drastically cuts down on commute time due to the sheer terror of other motorist. So, fairly dangerous.
This is my stance. A well secured and DOT approved jerry can is no more dangerous than fuel in the fuel tank. Ever seen the deisel rigs with a 100 gallon fuel pumping unit in the bed? Those units aren't always full of deisel. Lots of guys carry gasoline to fill agricultural equipment.
I've seen and used rotopax on motorcycles. Think a jerry can strapped to the roof or inside of a truck is dangerous? Imagine riding a motorcycle around with 10 gallons of fuel strapped to the backseat. Still, just as safe as the fuel tank between your legs. If you don't like the idea of driving around with fuel in a strapped down approved container get a prius.

It feels like it but given the feedback from the other members then i'll need to see about fabricating something for the sides and running a cable lock for the added security.
Ohhh yea definitely, i've done that trip very often. When i'm headed west from San Antonio, I stop in Junction, Sonora, Ft. Stockton and Van Horn, just to make sure i'm good until El Paso.

Already stated but Canada. Also here in Alaska. If I take off from my place and run to my favorite camp, if I decide to do any other exploring then I have to get fuel in small remote areas. Their gas is much more expensive and quality is always questionable. Rather carry my own then chance it with theirs.
