Been working on this one on the side for a while as another option for people who didn't prefer the look of the light-ready front section of the original design (it's obviously still in the works). I also wanted it to look even sleeker and thanks to Bandit Runner for planting the seed for sweeping the side stanchions back! The size is the same overall, 41"x84" and will have the same expanded metal flooring as the original full length design. This one may be for my wife so i'll let her decide if she wants it or not. For the front I plan to weld in flat stock the full width of the rack to still allow for mounting of any type of light and plan for at least one adjustable cross-bar to give it a forward boundary when needed. Now, what should I call it? Everything needs a cool name right?

How about the "Reverse Whitson"? Sounds dirty too lol Unless that's already your signature move!! hahaha too far?
 
nice but you need some sort of plate or guard on the front, i could see loads of things flying off if you had to slam your brakes while loaded up.. i do like the swept back look, makes it look fast, haha,

Yep, that would be the cross-bars' job, slide it forwards and backwards to fit and secure the load as needed.
 
I just bought a 5th gen and I have 2 4th gen with roof Rack. If you have something like this for the 5th any time soon I will buy it and even pay in advance.
 
Josh, if the swept-back side stanchions will not compromise the integrity nor strength of the roof rack, then can you incorporate that feature to the one you are currently welding for me?
 
Expanding on the "Bandit Rack" idea...How about the "Whitson Bandit"? Is there a prize for having your name picked as the winner? :biggrin2:
 
Am I missing something, or is there nothing 'holding' the front of that rack up? (Or does it need it?)

I definitely like the sound of it, but I'd like to see it completed with the cross bar and all of that. Once I win the lottery I've definitely got a WMW rack on my list. :D
 
Thanks guys, I'm liking "the bandit" a good bit actually, and maybe call the original "the expo" since its well suited for the expedition crowd. Speak now if its cheesy lol! Bandit runner, I mailed a check, did it not show up?? Lol, seriously though, your rack build is looking awesome and your work is top notch, myself and others appreciate the build pictures and info you put into your thread.

Toy2g, I can't find a 4th gen to build off of much less a 5th gen. Hopefully it works out some day and i can develope racks for other 4r platforms.

I really wish I could. I'm still paying off my tires, let alone paying for a rack. If you're feeling generous though, my birthday is in a few days... :biggrin2::biggrin2::biggrin2:
