Wondering about 4.0 V6 and Head Gasket @#6 "issue"

sorry for kinda long.....

So, P0306.....it seems to be something of a "known issue" for the 4.0 liter engine. with higher miles. However, it's also true that reading a forum can make things look more prevalent than they really are. If 8 people all come on and say "Yea, me too"...it sounds epidemic. But maybe it's just 8 out of 300,000. Or maybe it really is a problem and needs to be considered.

Anyway,it seems that quite a few people have complained that they got the dreaded P0306 code (misfire in #6). Many then took it to the dealership who promptly nailed them for a "tune up" including plugs and a coil....only to eventually get to the real problem- "your head gasket failed at #6; and it's leaking coolant into the cylinder. You're F'd." It seems as if ALL of these people were at 120,000 - 160,000, with the majority seeming to be right at 150,000 miles.

Symptoms beside the code would be rough (as if missing a cylinder) at startup, especially after sitting for while.

I'm wondering if most or perhaps ALL V6s over 100k miles have this leak, but it's so small that it simply isn't noticed (yet); plus, it seals back up very quickly after startup, due to the intense combustion temps? After reading all the post on this subject, I'm convinced that mine has had this small leak for 100k miles now. It must just be soooooo small, that it hasn't become (and perhaps never will) a major issue. Why do I think I have a small leak, and have for long time? Here's what I've experienced-

1- maybe 10 times since I bought my truck (10 years ago) it shuddered for 5 seconds after startup....but later smooth out.
2- a couple times in summer, while climbing a hill, I could see white smoke in my rear-view mirror. Why it's only happened 3 times (that I know of)....I can't say. But I know it did happen.
3- And this is the big one for me: I pulled all the plugs. They ALL look exactly the same......except #6! It had significantly more deposits on it (not black).

Now, like I said, I'm wondering if perhaps most 4.0 engines have some leakage at #6 (seems it's an admitted design flaw, and Toyota has changed the HG design, as I understand it), but since the leak is so small, the owner is just unaware. So the real question is- how many drivers have over 175,000 miles on their 4.0 and have not seen the CEL come on, and find out it's P0306?

Sorry for the length....but this could be a serious issue for people wanting to get high-miles out of their 4Runner, like me. I wonder if:

1- everyone with over 100k miles on their truck pulled the #6 plug plus any other plug....if they'd see an obvious difference with lots more deposits on #6? or,
2- not that many would, and the real truth is that though HGs will fail on our engine, just like any engine, it's just that when it does n ours, it happens at #6.

Again, sorry for the length.

I admit I've wondered about this too.... so good on you for putting it out there for discussion...

Netiher of our 4th gen V6's have had any CEL come on (knock on wood).. one has 115k the other 75k...both run like new..... but if they do I'm gonna get it fixed, because I love this generation 4Runner.

Me too...but when you have time, pull #6 plug (driver side closest to fire-wall) and any other plug. I bet you'll see a difference. I love mine too; and it has run perfectly (can't even tell it's running most of the time it's so smooth) since day 1......but also know coolant leaks into #6. There's just no doubt. BUT....I also know it's been doing this for at least 100k miles. Will it ever "blow"?? That's what I'm kinda trying to discover here.

No you got me thinking and wanting to go look at #6. If it does show. would it be worth it to replace both head gaskets now to prevent further damage? I have only had my 4Runner for a little over 2 months now. i kinda notice the slight shudder but quickly went as fast as i noticed it. I may calll around to see what mechanics would charge to do the head gaskets here.

If it ain't broke it, don't fix it. NO WAY you spend $3k or more for "peace of mind".

blackmax you bring up some valid concerns. This "issue" has been talked about extensively on this forum and others and the bottom line is, there are just too many variables and not enough reported cases to say there is a product issue with every single v6 head gasket... I mean it's easy to go all doom and gloom on forums like this and others... so it's important that for every problem we write or read about on here, to understand there are hundreds of thousands of actual 4th gen owners who have never experienced said issue and likely never will.

When I changed my wife's spark plugs last summer I took the plugs under a microscope, because well, I'm a bit of a nerd and I couldn't tell the difference between any of them. All identical and all normal. When I change the plugs in my 4Runner this weekend I'm going to do the same thing... if for no other reason than I'm curious. I don't expect to be able to tell the difference between any of the plugs in my 4Runner (which are likely originals) with 115,000 miles on them.

Working in the engineering field I also understand that everything has a "design life" and "operating parameters" it's meant to withstand without failure... because of this simple fact, it's hard to say that one or both of these haven't been violated for each blown headgasket reported/ documented case.... the actual percentage fixed in dealerships obviously isn't enough to trigger a product issue at the TMC. Do materials evolve, do design analyses tools and techniques change/ improve over the course of time, sure they do and I think like with any good manufacturer when the tools of the trade improve and there is an opportunity to improve the product at minimal expense to the company, every company worth a lick changes a design. It's not unlikely to think the headgasket design would change on the same engine from model year to model year... it's design evolution and in some case obsolesce or supply chain constraints that dictate these design changes and not an operating issue discovered by the customer.

I'm not buying every v6 engine has a headgasket leak, while an interesting theory, I have two in my driveway that debunk this doomsday scenario from actually being a reality.

Have to agree with you on your statement, there are a lot of variables to account for an not enough information to help narrow them down.

I'd like to see how many Tacomas and FJ Cruisers have this issue as well since they use the same 1GR-FE. There has been speculation (by myself as well) that Toyota purposefully superseded the old headgasket for the 1GR-FE in about '05~'06 because they realized it was possibly prone to failure (they had similar issues in the 80's and 90's with some of their engines) but I was told by a factory rep that this was more likely due to consolidation of US and Japanese sourced parts into one single part number (something that isn't entirely out of the realm of possibility, but it seems many HG issues are on pre-'05 1GR-FEs.)

The failure rate is far lower than many people make it seem, I'd probably guess around maybe less than 5~10% of all 1GR-FE equipped 4Runners may experience this in their lifetime (now keep in mind that headgaskets will fail, so we're talking abnormal failures typically under about 150k or so to be reasonable.)

I've been reading non stop about this issue as I just bought a high mileage (145k) 2005. My truck is exhibiting ZERO hesitation or rough start after sitting, no dash lights, and I can find no history of either in the dealer records.

Great thread, I look forward to hearing what others find, reading these forums would make any 1-GR owner totally paranoid. :D

Plan on changing my plugs soon. I'll take pics and post here.

I'm at 108,000 miles, no issues. Had my plugs changed at 80,000, so I'm about due.

better late than never

Got around to doing my plugs and inspected #6. Seems fine to mine. At least for now.

Mileage: 118,000 miles

so I have noticed that my 4Runner will drain the coolant over flow tank in about 3k miles. I have only had it for 6k miles, but it has been fairly consistent since I first noticed the coolant was low and discovered that the V6 may be prone to this issue. I have checked all around and have not been able to find any external leaks. It does idle at times where it will shake the truck shortly after start up but it does not sound rough. Also the oil has never looked milky. Is this worth having my mechanic check it out?

Ok, so reading this thread brings up a question. I'm not a "car guy," just have some mechanical inclination confident that I can do most of the routine work myself. Those brown rings on the bottom of the white plug body, what is that??
All my plugs have that brown ring of discoloration. It is heat related?

These HG threads have me spooked about my ride, although I can't say I've ever experienced the rough start up idle....

I'd keep an eye on it. If you are OCD, get a compression test. Uneducated guess would be "it's starting". If the C-test is ok, you are fine.

Well, Toyota says to change every 30K. These plugs have about 38K miles on them.

Here is what NGK says the "corona" on the plugs is. Normal I guess.

Also, they say not to use anti-seize. Something I saw the techs, at Lexus where I used to work, put on every car... and is debated up and down the interwebs on whether to use it or not.

I never touch the stuff personally.

I put some anti-seize on them. Its NO FUN when they won't come out and you end up breaking them and have to extract them. I don't have the tools for those instances.

I've got about 190k on my '05 V6. I've had a few rough starts here and there, but no codes thrown yet.

I changed my spark plugs at about 80k w/ NGK iridiums and they looked fine at the time. I'm probably overdue for another spark plug change now.

It looks like you have a bad head gasket. Those are the classic symptoms. If you have any doubts let it sit overnight then pull the plugs and scope out the cylinders for coolant seepage. This is usually in #6. Best of luck to you.

I just got the parts in to do my head gaskets. FYI, I searched for deals and this is where I got mine.

Engine overhaul gasket kit on ebay from royalsouthtoyota of Bloomington Indiana. I bought the part someone on another forum bought but when I called to pay they said that that number was not for a 4Runner. I bought Toyota Tacoma Tundra 4.0L 1GRFE V6 Head Gasket Set Genuine OEM OE (Electronics, Cars, Fashion, Collectibles, Coupons and More | eBay /itm/301330964641), but they said it was different than the 4R. price was 229.78 with shipping.

I bought a Asin water pump $79.79, a Stant thermostat $29.79 and fel-pro head bolts $40.99. I may measure the old bolts and see if they need to be replaced. Total $152.14 with 5% discount and shipping.

I ordered the head bolt tool from autopart.com Part Number: 9295 2 Pc. Toyota / Lexus Head Bolt Wrench Set $21.97 with shipping. Just over $400 for this stuff and I still need antifreeze and machine shop work.

The gasket set wasn't in stock, but everything got here quickly.

Advance auto has a $3 per rebate on the spark plugs so after discount code they will be almost nothing.

I forgot to order a crank bolt so I'll get that and the antifreeze at the stealer. I hate to give them a dime, but I guess there isn't an alternative.

Hope this helps someone.

edit: Machine shop is going to be 130 (inspect and pressure test)-380 (rebuild) depending on what needs to be done.

head gaskets

I just got my 1grfe head pulled off tonight and the #6 piston had a handful of water in it. I can't figure out how to upload pics or I would. Looking at the gasket I can't see an obvious reason why. I hope its not a cracked head.

I went through the stickied head gasket thread one night reading everything about it. based on the trend in the thread, and one member's discovery of a part number change in late '05 (if I remember correctly), my '08 "should" be ok. (knock on lots of wood). It seems that the gasket was changed after the 05 model year, as an overwhelming majority of the problems identified in that thread were 03-05.

Still, I went and put a mark on the overflow tank, and I check it periodically.
