they still have these in dark, red or tan wood with or without thumb rest for $305 plus $18 shipping with no trade in. that's much better than the $450 w/ old steering wheel trade in at the dealers. i'm considering getting it and maybe selling my leather steering wheel, either that or a t&h low bull bar which is around the same price!

Do any of you know if the steering wheel controls ( sport or limited models ) will work on the base model? I would prefer to have some working controls on the steering wheel.
I am not sure if i would have to buy an aftermarker radio to work with the steering wheel controls, but that would be an ok solution too since the base model radio sucks.
I had to get the base model because i am taller then normal and ONLY the base comes without a moonroof. Sorry, i guess i should say i am from canada and we CAN NOT special order 4runners here.

Hi there and welcome! I too have an SR5 without the steering wheel mounted audio controls and really wanted them. As far as I know, it is possible, but it'll cost quite a bit because the airbag is completely different, so you'll have to at least buy a new airbag plus the audio controls on the left and the switch blank on the right. If you wanted the leather wheel, that would cost you some more.

Well I just got back from Mikado in South San Francisco with my new steering wheel! Paid $305. These are the same steering wheels he sell to the Lexus dealerships and that's dealership's invoice price. No wonder why the dealer charges $450 plus exchange of old core. His price will o up slowly until it's dealership price, but he said if you mention you're from the 4runner forum that the $305 price will be good indefinitely. Pics to follow..
The guy was really nice and let me use his shop and tools to put it on right there. It took all about 10 minutes. The quality of the steering wheel is excellent. It feels a little chunkier than the stock, like a truck steering wheel should. His shop does repairs and oem parts for Lexus all over the nation. He was very eager and proved it to me by showing me his shipping bay, which had tons of packages arriving from and going to many Lexus dealerships from here to the east coast. The leather on my new steering wheel is much higher quality than my old limited wheel (think Lexus leather!). He had Lexus nav units, a/c units new and ones he's repairing for the dealerships. The coolest thing he showed me was his master key maker. There's not many of these around. He basically just needs to type in the VIN of the vehicle ( i saw Mercedes, Lexus, Toyota, Honda, etc..) and the machine will make the key to that exact car! Is that crazy or what?!
He's developing a lot of things for the Lexus/Toyota dealerships, like the Lexus key that has the door lock buttons on it. He showed me a prototype key with those functions plus buttons from the homelink right on the plastic part of the key, no need for the keychain remote! I was very glad to find this shop and will refer all my relatives (die hard Lexus owners) to his shop!
He doesn't want to piss off the Lexus dealers so he doesn't do much advertising, but he would gladly sell these at the same price he sells to to dealers!

i put all three colors up against the steering column and liked the red one best. i guess because it looks the most like wood, although all three are real wood. the dark one just didn't catch my eye. the guy showed me stock lexus steering wheels that cracked, sent from the dealers. the stock lexus steering wheels are a cement core with a veneer of wood wrapped around the outside! the one i got from him is wood inside. incidentally this new wheel was made in the same factory in japan that makes the stock lexus wheels. this guy has a deal with that factory to make these, and he says he's got many many accesories like this in the works(like the key remote) for lexus/toyota, and that he prefers keeping things looking stock.
