Worried about vehicle loading

I did a trip in late 2014 with a similar load (mostly guns and ammo). With a full tank and my "muscular buttocks" in it she weighed out at 5,840 lbs on a truck stop scale. It floated like a mid 70's Cadillac but the ride was controllable and comfortable for the entire 1400+ mile round trip. I had my 5100's by then but was still on factory springs all around.

i think the factory dunlops at 32psi was 2425lbs

find the duratrac load-inflation table and see what pressure you need to match the stock rating. what tires are you running, what is the load index? If the load index is 121 (what it says on tirerack) then 40psi is about 2245 lbs (using a universal table, mfr might be a bit different). Per Discount Tires table you would need about 45psi.

Just wanted to point out that according the manual you are not required to match stock tires rating, you are required to match your vehicle load:

Maximum load of tire
Check that the number given by dividing the maximum load by 1.10 of
the replacement tire is greater than 1/2 of the Gross Axle Weight Ratings
(GAWR) of either the front axle or the rear axle, whichever is greater.
For the GAWR, see the Certification Label. For the maximum load of the
tire, see the load limit at maximum cold tire inflation pressure mentioned on the sidewall of the tire. (→P. 626)

If you are going to inflate tires few PSI over requred pressure I suggest that you run chalk test. When you run unnecessary high PSI on tires you might reduce tire contact with the road and I don't have to tell you what does it mean on wet roads and during emergency brake.

He is moving cross country. If moving far left coast(like CA,OR,WA) I would be buying more ammo prior to the move not selling off. Limits, regulations and such. :AK47:

I've never understood buying ammo you don't use, but then again i've never purchased guns for art either

Do you have a savings account or a comic book collection?

Do you fill your tank up or just buy $10 at a time?

Do you have enough socks for the week, or extras?

Ammo is something that having individuals with large stockpiles is a very effective deterrent to a government using ammo taxes or restrictions as a mechanism for gun control. It's effectively a crowd source veto on certain government actions that can be effectuated by a relatively small group. I don't keep more than a few thousand rounds of each caliber. But I do appreciate those who do. And I do have a large stock pile of primers. Primers are the only part I can't readily make myself. Probably never use them all. But 100,000 primers fit in a small box and cost very little to keep as a backup.

Ha!

But yes we are moving, so it’s not like it’s just camping gear. A lot of the stuff in the back are pretty high density, for example a craftsman tool chest full of tools, ammo, papers, etc.

I just don’t want to prematurely wear out the tranny or suspension components.

Thanks all, I do feel better about this. I guess this is how you build trust with your vehicle!

Ah, gotcha. maybe a U-haul and tow the T4r behind it or rent a uhaul trailer and just tow the weight (would do better than it being in the T4R)? If I packed up all my 2nd amendment stuff it would weigh alot too...haha

Well, I'm sure this conversation could get sideways pretty quickly so I'll just make a few comments:

1) How many lbs of ammo does the OP have in his 875 lb load? if that's your hobby, go for it, but more than 100lbs of ammo is quite a bit
2) I'm not sure I agree with the economics of "ammo taxes" you suggest above, but everyone needs a hobby

Well now I am even more confused.
Page 462 of the manual says that vehicles with rear differenctial lock have a total capacity of only 835 lbs vs those without have over 1150 lbs!
835 lbs is not that much for total capacity of occupants and cargo.
Would I seriously risk damaging the rear diff lock?

100 lbs of ammo isn't much honestly. A case (1000 rounds) of 9mm is over 30 lbs. I've shot over 500 rounds in a single range day and that's not much to me. In Illinois, if you buy ammo in Cook County (biggest county in the state), they have an additional 5 cents per round. So you buy a box of 50 rounds, that's an additional $2.50 on top of sales tax. Buy a case, that's an additional $50. That makes a HUGE difference.

This has been way over analyzed.

OP, since your rig is new I’m sure you’re in sound mechanical condition.

Tires are the most important thing. Make sure you’re properly inflated. Beyond that, enjoy the trip and stop sweating the small stuff. You’re not going to break anything.

Only if you use it. And doubtful even then. Don't overthink this. It will ruin the sightseeing while you drive across the country.

Why would you not use it?

That's exactly my question. Just go fire it off at a range. If it's season specific hunting ammo, then I can't imagine that (1) it's very much or (2) it's worth carrying West. If it's range fodder, go have some fun before your trip. If it's hunting ammo, give it to a hunting buddy.

If OP is part of ZORT, and needs to keep a few hundred pounds of ammo in his truck, best of luck.

I managed to sell most of it, and total weight from ammo is down to 32 pounds.
Grand total weight after shipping 270 pounds via UPS (not cheap) is 657 plus my wife and I, so we are just under 1000 pounds, or right around 5,675 total gvw. Not bad at all!

Welcome to T4R.org!

If you're new, go ahead and introduce yourself.

Originally from Oregon, I have worked a stressful job in DC for the last 7 years, but have decided it is time for a lifestyle change, so my wife and I are packing up our bags and starting fresh in the great state of Idaho!
Thanks everyone! Looking forward to using the Runner out west, where it belongs.

Ride the Metro one last time before you depart, just for the memories. Have fun in ID.

After 3 years doing the same in DC, my wife and I have started to question whether this lifestyle is healthy. We're considering the same move but to Colorado, really depending on whether she can work remotely (no practical reason why she couldn't). Would be nice to have DC wages without the cost of living and all the related stress that only just begins with a ridiculous commute.

For those who suggest airbags, how does it affect unloaded driving? When we go camping loaded with maybe 500 pounds (?), along with occasional towing -- the rear end squats and I get high-beamed by oncoming traffic. I've considered airbags, but read it can affect unloaded comfort and drivability. 95% of my driving is with much less or no cargo, so every-day drivability is more important.

You simply reduce the air pressure in the bags when you are not loaded. Then it reverts to normal driving with the springs.
