Worst Problem with 5th gen??

I have a 2011 and the only problems so far have been the driver side front bearing that I replaced at 104 000KM and the tailgate lock assembly that I haven't replaced yet.

I can tell you it's a very solid vehicule, I drive multiple time a year over 280km of logging roads and trails to get to my fishing/hunting cabin, I'm always very carefull but these are not easy roads.
 
I find the rear window wiper to range from 'useless' to 'moderately okay'.

Specifically it just kind of makes you a tiny little half assed smile shaped window of visibility. Pretty anemic after coming from a VW Golf, which could basically clear about 8 football fields of water off the hatchback in one swipe of the wiper.

The antenna is now located on the glass of each of the rear side windows. At first I thought it was defrosters for the side windows, but it looks like the antenna to me.

This. Satellite reception is garbage. But hey, first world problems, right? I came from a BMW 3 series that would get satellite radio reception in an underground bunker. It's annoying to drive beneath a tree limb and have the radio chop in and out. If that's the worst thing though, I can live with it.

I think you're in good hands. I did the same thing as you, patrolled many different boards, trying to figure out what to expect from ownership. The Cherokee forums are a blood bath of issues, Xterra's and VW's (Touareg) had a few scary items that I didn't want to worry about. This forum was the outlier. Where the other forums were riddled with horror stories, 99% of the threads on this one we're just about people modding their trucks, simple how-to's, or complaints of "why would Toyota not make a perfect vehicle for all my needs and wants for $20?." If this is what I could expect, then I would be more than happy to purchase a 4runner.... I did, and I am.

And there wasn't a car review that didn't sneer at how outdated the body-on-frame was, how long they'd been making 4runners, and how long since the last major revision. Ok, except it was as if they couldn't even conceive of anyone wanting a vehicle with the bugs worked out of the line. Not "Some people may consider this either good or bad". No, clearly only someone who still owned 8-tracks, a 1200 baud modem and tube televisions would be attracted to a 4runner.

I still get a little riled thinking about it. Pretentious twat critics.

On the other hand, I do still use an old Motorola flip-phone as my cell and Windows Vista on my home computer.

OK, its a given that these things are tanks, are pretty much as reliable as the sun rising in the east. That the plant they are made in is one of the two best in the world, and you'll have to show me who would be #1.

Has someone, anyone, bought or possessed a 5th gen where something really crappy, scary, and unforeseen gone wrong with it...where within days/weeks/months you were back at the dealership ready to curse/cry/spit about some issue that, though was not systemic to the species of vehicle, still was a major issue that needed some major repair work?

and no, my SR5 is simply wonderful. i have what my wife told me was a defrost-induced crack of my windshield that will be replaced in a few weeks, but other than that, no clunk, 4WD works as advertised, its way more smooth and comfy than any mag has reviewed it to be, and i am a fully satisfied customer to this point.

1. The driveshaft sometimes makes a clunk that apparently doesn't damage anything if I'm sitting at a stoplight and start to drive.

2. The lumbar support sometimes feels loose, which is resolved by either turning it back up, or turning it all the way down.

3. Easily the most egregious offense, would be that when using the windshield wiper fluid, the ridge along the vertical portion of the drivers side windshield isn't high enough and the fluid sprays on the driver side window. I demand a recall...

In other words, no... it's been great.

side windows do have defrosters

Notice that most complaints come from pre '14 owners.

This one made a chuckle as I can't tell you how many times I've been stopped at a light with my arm resting out the window and I spray myself with washer fluid. I'll never learn...
