Broc, I put, 285's on for a few different reasons, mostly I wanted as much ground clearance as possible even though my rock climbing days are over. Living here in Florida, some of the boat ramps here are pretty steep. I have seen many other vehicles "bottom" out when loading/unloading due to the angle of recovery from the ramp to the road. I understand why others use lower size tires, more clearance for tire travel when off roading, but again, not too many rocks down here.
As Ride also stated, Aesthetics. I think filling the wheel wells simply looks better.
Micky, unless you do not like the looks of the OEM wheels or, if you think that you need new/larger wheels for the 285's, mine fit nicely on the OEM wheels. There might be other 285/70/17 tires out there that require a wider wheel, not sure. Here is a photo of the tires as described in my signature with factory wheels.
And as a direct answer to your question, I think those wheels look good. But you know about opinions.........
