Would you pay %25 more for a 4runner?

Should they start making the 4Runner stateside I guarantee quality will go down. The Japanese production lines are super meticulous with a heavy Kaizan going on. I would not want one built here. The Japanese are meticulous and take a nationalistic sense of pride in what they make. It will be the beginning of the end for the 4Runner legacy. Let’s hope this does not happen.

Are you saying quality on a Tacoma and Tundra is poor? Toyota has already proven they can manufacturer anywhere and build quality. Their manufacturing process is legendary.

My Rav4 was assembled in Kentucky. My Camry Hybrid and 4runner were assembled in Japan. I really hate to say this but I think the Japanese made Toyotas are simply better made. And to be fair, the imported Toyotas are ASSEMBLED in Japan. Most of the 100,000 parts that go into assembling a vehicle are collected from 3rd world parts of Asia where labor is cheap. I can't imagine US made Toyotas getting their parts from anywhere different.

It's tough. I don't want to believe it but a part of me won't let it go.

I’m not sure what year Camry you have but I don’t think the RAV4 was ever made in the US.

nice.. youre right

i looked up the old VIN that i had and they both start w/ a "J". Now i can rest a little easier with a US assembled Toyota. For some reason, i thought the VIN started with a "1"

ALL my Toyotas have been Japanese Imports and solid! My Mule is 36 years this week and never been to a repair shop......My early Hondas were far better than my Ohio built one as well. Japanese attention to detail and work ethic is Legend for a reason!:thumb3:

Sorry but if Yota starts building the 4Runner stateside it would be less appealing to me. Japanese quality control and meticulous attention to detail is exactly how they buried the domestics. I am betting resale value would drop some as well. I worked in production where Kaisan was implemented but no where’s near what Toyota production line in Japan does.

I don't think you folks read the post above by 1jzgte. Light trucks and SUVs imported from Japan have been subject to a 25% tariff for years. If you have a 4Runner, you've already paid 25% to the US Treasury. The new tariffs proposed by the GOP apply to automobiles, not light truck and SUV imports.

Wow, I just noticed that this was your first post. So you, not knowing what you are talking about, just parroted another poster who was also incorrect. Topped off with a post title of:

"Don't let facts get in the way of an opinion..."

I have a feeling that partisan propaganda was your motivation, and not 4runners. Maybe you should just piss off all together.

Agreed Toyota builds a superior product wherever they manufacture it. It has been my experience though on their older made in Japan and current made in Japan products that attention to detail seems to be a bit higher. I believe all of their 4X4 built on frame wagons(I hate the term SUV) are still made in Japan. Even my first Toyota a 1981 Tercel impressed me.

Since this thread is bound to get locked, getting this in first. This is a good example of something we should all pay attention to and remember going forward. Regardless of the party implementing the policies, it should be clear that such a policy benefits none of us. At best, tariffs clearly take choice away from consumers, disturbs what is supposed to be an open market, and hurts relationships with the rest of the world. At worst, people HERE lose their jobs and we hit another recession.

And recessions aren't exactly friendly to vehicles like the 4runner, or us owners.

How dare you approach this with logic, reason and care for your fellow American?! Don’t you know, this is about us versus them, demo-rat versus re-thuglican, identity politics and culture wars are the only way to keep America great!

Seriously though, great post, nice to see reasonable people exist on the internet.

Continuing down this rat-hole, I'll ask: If tariffs are so bad, why do other countries apply them or other restrictions (i.e IP transfer) on our products? I'll give a partial answer, the EU can not compete with US productivity, China can not compete with US intellectual property, though both are getting better. I agree that a tariff-free world/level playing field would be best for everyone, and the present administration's use of tariffs hopefully is only temporary in trying to achieve this end.

Ya they are quite shit relatively speaking (for Toyotas) in terms of quality. Worst offender is the Sequoia followed by the Tundra. Tacomas seem slightly better.

The LC200, Prado, and Hilux seem to be more solid. This is coming from the family ownership experience except for the Hilux latest gen which I don't know anyone to hear from so far

Just to clarify, the most vocal critics of these tariffs are Republican and the most vocal supporters are the Sanders/Warren/Brown/Ocassio-Cortez wing of the Democratic Party.

tariffs

It won't happen... President Trump is just playing the cards against an EU that needs to negotiate.
But to answer your question, yes people would or they would buy more American cars. That is exactly what happened when in 1963 the USA imposed a (still exists) a 25% tax on imported small trucks.
Me personally I am not buying another (I have a 2007) until they bring back the V8.

I see Trump wants to put a %25 tariff on all foreign cars. I think this would pretty much kill off the 4runner.

sorry to disappoint, but the terrain is made in canada

don't worry, when this backfires maybe we will get a $12B handout to buy cars

Wow, learn something new every day. I had no idea the mountains and hills here in the U.S. were made in Canada. Gotta update the captions on my pictures of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.

:p

Tariffs and Made in China imports

Just to clarify, the most vocal critics of these tariffs are Republican and the most vocal supporters are the Sanders/Warren/Brown/Ocassio-Cortez wing of the Democratic Party.

The most vocal opponents of tariffs are not the majority of Republicans. The Democrats you named are also vocal critics. They just aren't getting the press coverage the Republicans are. Notice that the most vocal Republicans in the news are not running for re-election.

Tariffs are bad for our economy. It's been tried before and it failed then too. The current administration is playing chicken with the world economy.

Americans consumers can decide to stop the Chinese intellectual property theft, unfair trade practices and consumption of animal products like shark fins, elephant tusks and Rhino horns by not buying their cheap "Made in China" products. Currently, we're paying for their military build-up, consumption of energy and precious resources (oil & minerals) and growing domination of the world economy. If we keep buying those cheap products that are built with planned obsolescence we'll be giving world power to the Chinese. Buy things that last, that you can buy parts for, that can be repaired and are made in the USA or EU.

I stand on my soapbox position. :banplease:

I agree to keep politics out of this, but as I can't afford a new 4Runner now, if this new tariff goes through, I'll never be able to own another one.

I have a hangup about owning a used 4Runner, I prefer new ones. Actually I always felt like that with my other vehicles. Unless I knew the previous owner well, i.e. relative, friend, etc...

On some things, the price for parts are insane. Had a over the oven microwave. Handle broke. Went online to get a new one. $200 for it. I searched around to make sure I wasn't seeing things and it was true.

Went out and bought another over the oven microwave for cheaper.
