WTF Airbags Deployed for no reason

Cant they easily prove that a lift caused this to happen. Raised COG etc etc. Happened to one other person on this forum. I believe they totaled the car as deployment of airbags, especially side curtain airbags basically destroys the interior.

Totaled! I hope this doesn't happen to his!

Update....no progress, over 2 and half weeks of getting jerked around by yota

So about 3 days after I dropped off the truck they told me I had to make a claim with Toyota and then Toyota was going to send out their own service tech to look at the car and make a report, after a week the guy gets there. Nobody calls me to tell me what he determined so I called to find out what was up, the service manager said that the tech was going to suggest to Toyota that they pay, but he had to send it to Toyota first. After not hearing anything for a few days I called and the service manager told me it had been moved to Toyota's legal department and that it was out of his hands and they would be calling me, this was last weds i believe( the days are all getting blurred with these toyota shenanagans). I didnt hear anything so by Friday i called the manager and left a message saying i hadnt heard anything and i wanted him to give me a number for legal so i could get the ball rolling, later that day i get a call from some one telling me that legal will be calling me (the service manger allready told me this so it was a complete waste). Still havent heard from legal, and I have left a message today with the person who called me friday, saying I want the number for toyota legal. About to call again this is so unreal its been 2 and half weeks now and nothing has been done i need my runnner back i bought it for work, my dog, and driving in the mountains, none of which i can do in the pos corolla loaner. Any new suggestions? Oh and i called my insurance and they said if toyota didnt pay they would cover it and then go after toyota.

I had a feeling this was how they would proceed, you opened up a can of worms for them. You have a largeissue for a company trying to push it's safety, when a safety product fails you have all sorts of the company being concerned.

My feeling, if Toyota fixes this they admit there airbags failed and fired for no reason. This might open up an avenue for you to proceed with a legal claim for culability on there part. Even if you don't want to go that route. A world with laywers everywhere :toilet: You should not stop untill you are given detailed information, else you might want to consult your own lawyer. If you use your insurance you'll have a claim against the truck and it will drop in value, why the heck should you let that happen?

The RSCA button doesn't disable the airbags. It lowers the sensitivity of the sensors. If you were to get into an accident they would still go off. It's all in the owners manual.

^ yea but normal driving conditions you shouldnt have the rsca button on. if your saying that

i'm not so sure that makes any sense...you would only want to reduce the sensitivity of the sensor if you were wheeling and putting the truck on unusual angles that it wouldn't see in normal driving conditions. otherwise, you would always want it on

i meant have the button turned on which in turn would turn lower the sensitivity of the bags. i was trying to find out if the guy that posted above was saying that he should always have the button depressed

Same here. Update time! If you got it fixed but toyota legal made you sign some sort of a nondisclosure document just post and let us know it was resolved but that you can't go into any more detail.

I just got chills thinking about all the creative parking I've done, on the sides of snow piles, etc, and that it could have caused a deployment. I will be more prudent now... (and use that button). I hope all worked out for the original poster.

The end

Hey guys sorry for not updating recently, so after having my car gone for about a month the situation and customer service was horrible. I had spent a month playing phone tag with numerous people at Toyota( me calling them and them not calling me back and me calling again). I have to say Toyota and the people who i did manage to get a hold of were unbelievable, it was the typical you have to call person A, I call them then they say you must call person B who had refered me to person A in the first place. My claim manager was horrible, i told him that the airbags going off, and Toyota's unresponsiveness was ridiculous and it needed to be addressed (i.e. my car fixed immeadatly along with Toyota paying for a loaner car similar to the runner, to which he said he could do nothing. I asked for a manager he said he didnt have one, i said well then do you walk into work and not answer to anyone, which he responded snidly to and said im the only person i could talk to, i asked him and the service manager at Bob Bridge Toyota( were my truck was) for the number for Toyota corporate, to which they both said they couldn't give out numbers. At this point I had had enough, i wanted my car back and an explanation of why the bags went off, i was tired of driving around the POS corrola loaner which i couldn't go to the mountains in or put my dog in. I went into the dealer probably the third time and talked to the service manager telling him that i would be contacting the news, my lawyer and posting all over the forums about my experience if the situation was not addressed immediately. I also told him I had already spoke with my insurance company and they said they would be suing Toyota to pay for the repair if i made a claim. I also expressed the same notions to someone who i talked to on the phone with at Toyota North America. a week or two later some one called me telling me Toyota would be paying to fix my car and would pay for a comparable loaner car, although they wouldn't tell me why the airbags deployed. Finally about 2 months after the ordeal started, I got my truck back and Toyota had to pay for a 4300 dollar rental car bill and over 7000 dollars in parts and god knows what inlabor. Moral of the story say your going to get your laywer and go to the news first, and Toyota customer service blows. At least they had to pay around 14k to fix it, but i still don't know why they went of and Toyota wouldn't ensure me that it wouldn't happen again.

Man, I'm sorry to hear of that fiasco. You could claim medical damages for hearing loss, those airbags are loud as hell.

Do you have any pics of the side curtain?

Oh that is just about the worst case scenario there!! I am really sorry to hear that, but now you know you have 10k in work that is done to your truck! I am glad it didn't come out of pocket beside having to deal with the BS and a crappy Corolla!! Best of luck to you in the future!

Glad it all finally worked out. Thanks for updating us.
Did they give you a new 4runner as a loaner? Hope you thrashed it around some.
