WTF with Navigation?

My Navigation freezes up and reboots too often for my liking. Seems to crash when in navigation and switching to audio and then back again. My 2014 does automatic software updates, right? Would a new map version help?

Thanks Lester. It looks like I might not have the current versions of software. I wasn't able to download the software files from the document :(

Our navigation is garbage. Austin, TX - Durango, CO... Trying to route me on paths that increase travel time 3+ hours. Come on! In Google Maps I trust. :noidea:

I typically use Waze but since I bought this truck I have been trying the Nav. It does OK around town and on the Interstates. I wish I could mirror Waze in the display.

Tell you what,

Do it again, but this time disconnect the NEG battery terminal (4 hr minimum)! Let us know how you make out!

Cheers

Worked this time. Thx. I have the speed limit showing now. But this Navi system really suc's if you ask me. Very hard to use, does not give you the true closet's way to get to destination, and that is if you can even put in the destination your looking for! I just use my iPhone. It works way better. A shame that they can make such a great vehicle, but fail when it comes to the Navi. system.

interesting. Different strokes for different folks I'd guess. My new 4R is the first built in NAV system I've been happy to use. Always, before, I preferred my phone/google maps to built in NAV, but so far I've gotten just what I need from the Toyota system.

I haven't fingered through it yet, I've been able to do everything I needed via voice control; which itself has impressed me.

Double impressed with setting up a home screen I like. The buttons along the sides combined with custom home screen have been perfect for me.

good luck ;)

on my 2016 T4R the nav system does not show speed limit on the display. I set this to show , but nothing appears 700 miles on it.

I have a Garmin nav unit that shows this info which IMO works better than this OEM nav unit .

also this has a year old nav program in it. I was finding that the exit # where not showing correctly on a road that had been changed last year.

how to update this or correct it ? thanks for any help .

It only shows the speed limit while navigating to a location and you have to hit the info (i inside a circle) icon twice to get the speed to show up. the info icon is to the right of where it tells you how far to your destination.

No nav system is perfect. Ford users complain about Sync, Audi/VW users complain about their RNS systems, Jeep users complain about the MyGig and Uconnect systems, etc so on and so forth until the cows come home. Some show posted speed limits, some show traffic, some show weather, some show fuel prices and some show fingerprints while others do not.

Point is.. don't expect nav systems that are perfect. They get you from point A to B? Then it's doing its job....and that's what it was designed for.

And they break as does Microsoft Windows, Mac OSX, Android operating systems, etc.

And yet Garmin, TomTom, even 'generic' setups like Audiovox GPSs work without fail, mostly.

I agree that the Etune nav is shit. Absolute shit. I sold my cheapo Garmin 205 after buying the 4R but I wish I hadn't.

My entire nav / audio locks up at least once ever hour that it's on and it either powers itself down and restarts, or I have to hold the power button down for 10 seconds or so to force a restart.

The main difference being that those are dedicated GPS units the sole purpose of being a GPS unit. These Auto OEM units are AM/FM Radios, Dvd players, Cd players, Bluetooth streaming devices, phone proxies, satellite radios and Nav units. Do I wish we had better in vehicle options without it looking like a tacky tacked on mess? Sure!

But like I said for every person that hates entune you have others that love them.. same goes for every other OEM vehicle nav unit. It doesn't excuse the stupid errors and crap some people have to deal with but...Microsoft has been making an OS for a very long time and ask me how well that works sometimes.

I followed the instructions by rigtec to power cycle the nav/radio by removing the 20A fuse over night . the next day the speed is being shown.

I do have to go to options then back to get it [MPH] to display sometimes.

I do use these devices to aid in the traveling , but do not rely on these devices 100% ,,, perhaps 25% ,,, due to errors I have had in the past. I do use maps and write up a travel plan when going to the unknown regions .

they do screw up at times . roads exit ramp # change and these are outdated updates my 2016 june has a may 2015 update. next update nov 2016.. not good enough IMO..

Boy, I thought I was having issues when I originally posted this. After reading some of the comments, I can live with an occasional glitch every now and then. Truth be told, other than some questionable routes that the unit has chosen, I've really only had 1 'lock-up' and 1 'power down/reboot' in the 16 months of ownership.
