After reading the forum's and staring down the job at hand in dealing with leaking rear shocks on my 03 4Runner limited, I made the common command decision to strip out the hydraulic shock system and replace it with Monroe OES Spectrum from the local OReilly's. I really hate one man jobs like this that eat up a weekend. But, long story short, it is a job that can be done. I tied up the tubes connected to the back shocks and wrenched off the front strut lines. I didn't take the whole mess out. The 4Runner rides nice, smooth, and corners tight. The Monroe's were a bit stronger than the original equipment and the front struts were a ***** to get in. It took a lot of pry bar and rod action to force the wheels down to get the strut into its saddle. Very happy with the quality of the Monroe replacements, so don't buy into needing anything more expensive or specialized, unless you like to feed an ego. Crazy that Toyota built this system that no one wants to repair or service. Stupid stupid stupid......

Just out of curiosity, were you able to reuse your springs off the XREAS shocks on the new Monroes?
I've noticed that on the 5th gen's, at least the front XREAS springs appear to be different (as compared to the non-XREAS springs up front on the SR5/TE). Always wondered if there would be any compatibility issues.
