It is sweet, when it works.
I don't know about the US, but they wanted $1500 just to replace one actuator and line (drivers side).
Imagine what happens when you get a leak on the other side...then a shock leaks..then a sensor craps out. Get my drift? It's a dealer only system that would probably cost upwards of $5000-6000 to repair (completely) at the dealer.
It's not alone though...We have a sweet dealer only exhaust manifold issue too...and the cables to the moonroof are nice as well!
Options are great, but they shouldn't cost 1/2-1/3 of the value of the vehicle to replace at 100k miles.
You are absolutely right- if it cost $6K to replace, I'd say screw it. But, I'm pretty sure your dealer was quoting you to replace the whole system. If not all of it, at least half. X-REAS shocks are cross linked in a closed system. If you replace one, at the very least, you must replace the other one that is cross linked.
