I'd say its better just not to be in an area where it's dangerous! Carrying or not. You'd still be counting on figuring out someone is going to hurt you and reacting in time. I could just walk up and shoot you and if didn't have a reason to see it coming you'd still be pretty dead. And then I'd have 2 guns!
I still like my chances better WITH my gun in the truck as opposed to WITHOUT my gun.
I carry for protection. Not because I go to bad places, or feel like a bad ass when I carry. I travel a lot for work, and I am frequently in areas I am not familiar with. I drive through Atlanta, many times at night. If I get a flat tire or otherwise breakdown, I'm going to feel a lot safer knowing I can defend myself. Even when I'm in areas that I am familiar with and feel safe, bad things can still happen.
It's not about being a gun-totting gangster, or anything like that. It's about knowing that there are bad people in the world who do bad things. And if I encounter one who wants to harm me, I'd rather have my gun with me as opposed to being at their mercy. All about being prepared.
