XenonDepot HID vs LED, initial photo. (Pics reposted)

Sometimes one of my lights don't turn on. Seems like something is loose with the connector, but am not sure how I am supposed to tighten it given the clips.

I had a similar issue on my 4th gen that would cause the lights to flicker. I fixed it by wrapping a zip tie around the connector and tightening it as much as I could, then trimming the excess. It's kind of a jerry-rigged solution, but it worked for me.

Ok I just bought the xtream LED kit for my low beams and just about ever other LED bulb for the interior .... let's see how this goes

Grab us some good quality before and after shots, please- I could really use them for the Consolidated Lighting thread. Don't forget the bulbs are clockable (6/12 or 3/9).

i installed my XD HID kit this weekend. no relay was used. went based off of the guide posted up above and checked my other vehicles with aftermarket hid and non have a relay. straight plug an play.

i did though have to change the polarity on both sides.

and i do have some play with the rubber grommet and the headlight dust cover. i might have drilled one step too far. :sobbing:

Correct, the relay harness is completely optional for the 4Runner when using the Xtreme Ballast since its a low draw ballast.

HID bulbs definitely can't dim and LED bulbs can but I don't know of any for automotive headlights yet.

I installed the 5000k kit. My vehicle has the 2 in 1 LED DRL fogs. I think the 5000k is a good match for the fogs. I've also used 5000k in another 4Runner & was very pleased.

I'm no stranger to HIDs. I've had them a Wrangler (headlights and fogs) and currently have them in my BMW 1200GS motorcycles. My Wrangler seems to eat bulbs and ballasts (DDM Tuning). I ended up going with LEDs in my headlights, but didn't have projectors. My 1200GSs have been rock solid with DDM Tuning.

I hated changing bulbs and ballasts in my Jeep and don't want to go back to that mess. I'm looking at doing the H9 conversion just for the simplicity.

What kind of lifespan are people getting out of HID bulbs and ballasts (XD or other kits)?

We have our HID bulbs rated for 2500-3000 Hours and the ballast can last longer but have them rated for 4-6 years.

Did your housing ever clear up? The same thing happened to my driver side headlight, major condensation. took the back off the get fresh air in it while driving to hopefully air it out and dry it out, it went away, but came right back once the car sat... any ideas for a permanent fix?

Not sure if this will help, but on my Sienna I had this issue after switching bulbs. I just dried it out with compressed air and left the car parked in the sun for few days or more instead of garage parking and the problem never came back.

I've had my Philips 4300K HID kit for two weeks now and am very happy with it.

Visibility at night time is much improved and the light is "cleaner" looking on the road. The HIDs very much appear stock with the projector headlamps- this is how it should have come from the factory.

I'll post a longer-term review at 6 months and 1 year as well. My only real concerns at this point are premature bulb burnout and potential condensation in the headlamps due to messing with the factory seal by drilling into the cover.

No mention in the directions of drilling anything.... is there a write up on jere somewhere? I assume it just needs the housing drilled out larger?

Yes just the dust cover. Just big enough but not too big
